As of right now it seems like Karen Fukuhara is kind of a surprise in the making since she came out of virtually nowhere it would appear to become an overnight star. Her credits aren’t all that long but she has the makings of what could be an action star if she so chooses since what she’s done so far has been pretty impressive. It’s enough to say that she might be one of those few that can step on a set and just be ready to go no matter what. She definitely benefits from the training that she gets before a production starts but it also would appear that Karen is the type that might be so naturally gifted that it simply comes to her when she needs it rather than forcing her to really summon up the courage and the notion of having to prepare herself for a role.
Here are a few things you might not have known about her.
10. She’s had a few interesting jobs in her past.
Karen has worked as a translator, a subtitles editor, and even as a waitress in a Reggae sushi restaurant. Who in the world would think up a Reggae sushi restaurant? Right off the bat her job history leaves a person shaking their head thinking that she’s obviously seen some things before getting to the big screen.
9. She has a degree in Sociology.
Karen is definitely educated and a degree in Sociology can take you further than you might think since it has a lot to do with figuring out how people behave in a given society and why. If she was a good enough student it would take her a lot of places if she wanted, and it could help her to better integrate into whatever group she finds herself in.
8. She has a brown belt in Kyokushin Karate.
Kyokushin translates out to ‘the ultimate truth’. This style of karate is full contact and is just brutal to watch. It’s a style that, in competition, has definite rules, but it seems like a one-dimensional version of MMA to be honest.
7. She played Katana in Suicide Squad.
It seems too dismissive to call Katana ‘mean’. Let’s just say she’s really, REALLY focused and doesn’t take any guff from anyone. Being something less than a hero and something more than a villain has its advantages. After all, she didn’t have an explosive placed anywhere on or in her person for the mission. She didn’t exactly get along with everyone but then again she wasn’t required to either. Her character was one of those that people had a slight issue with when it came to her appearance, but in truth she was decked out just as she needed to be for the movie, as comic book representations don’t always come off as practical.
6. She’ll be coming back for Suicide Squad 2.
At this point the second movie is already in production so it’s safe to assume that she’ll be there the entire time. Fans did like her and a few of the other cast members so it’s definitely safe to say that we’ll be seeing a few of them come back. Obviously Diablo probably won’t be there unless, well, movie and comic magic. How Katana will coincide with the rest of the characters in the second movie will be interesting to see since she was never a prisoner and thus Waller has limited control over her.
5. She’s only been acting since 2013.
Karen is still what you would call a newbie and yet she’s been killing it so far with what she’s done. This seems like a massive stroke of luck that she was discovered for this role, but then again looking at what she’s done so far and the level of intensity she brings to her roles it’s easy to see that whoever picked her made the right choice.
4. She has a very short filmography as of now.
There’s every confidence it will build as she keeps on pushing forward with her career. The roles she’s already taken have easily been good enough to propel her forward and it’ll be fun to see what she does in future productions and how well she performs.
3. She used to be involved in an a cappella group.
The group was known as the UCLA Medleys and she was with them for a while so you can assume that she has a rather nice voice. It seems though that acting was the road she wanted to travel.
2. She has great discipline on a set.
It seems that during one take she was still getting used to the spacing on the set and accidentally knocked down a light. She kept going however, which prompted the director to keep the shot and not bother with going over it again.
1. She had to train for two months to learn how to wield a sword.
Despite her skill in karate wielding a sword is still a great deal different and requires a certain level of training. You can tell she got it down though.
Look for her to appear more in the future, it should be interesting to see how she grows as an actor.
