Days of Our Lives fans are heartbroken to learn that Steve will not be back. Stephen Nichols has played the role for decades — off and on — and he’s been good at it. He’s a character we all love to love, and now that he’s not been able to work through a contract he feels good about, he’s off the show. He will not appear much longer, and fans are heartbroken over it. But before he leaves, we thought we might just learn a few more things about him before we don’t see him anymore.
1. He’s Always Off and On
Fans are sad, but they shouldn’t’ be too sad. He will be back. Steve never leaves for long. He donned his famous eye patch for the first time in 1985 for five years. He left in 1990 and came back in 2006. He left again in 2009 and came back in 2015. He will be back, friends.
2. He Turned Down a Surprising Offer
Believe it or not, Stephen Nichols turned down something many Americans would probably kill for. He turned down a scholarship to THE Ohio State University. It was an art scholarship, but he said, “No, thank you,” and moved on.
3. He Turned Down His Scholarship for A Bizarre Reason
Rather than obtaining a college degree, Nichols decided he had other things to do. He decided he would simply move on and become a monk. He lived in LA in an ashram where he served food to nuns and other monks. It’s a life he lived for the better part of three years.
4. He Left Monk-hood for Hollywood
After three years of living life celibate, he chose to go to the Theater Academy, where he studied with some famous faces. Acting must have worked out well for him there because he’s become quite famous since. He’s also done with his role as a monk.
5. He’s Starred with Some Famous People
In addition to his role in the soaps, he’s acted on stage, on television, and in the movies. He even co-starred once with the famous Demi Moore in a movie called “Choices,” which you might not know much about. He loved working with her, though. He’s starred with Kevin Kline, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert Downey Jr.
6. He’s A Married Man
It’s almost hard to imagine him married to anyone but Kayla, but he really is. He’s been married for more than three decades, since 1984, to his wife. Her name is Lisa Gordon. We don’t know much about her because they keep their private life fairly private, but they seem happy enough.

7. He’s a Father of Three
He and his wife have been having a good time for the past thirty-plus years making babies. They’ve bot three kids, and they all live their own lives quite well. He doesn’t put his family out there much, which is probably why they all seem to be so relatively normal.
8. He’s Part of a Supercouple
If there is one thing he’s managed to do while on Days, it’s create a super couple with the beautiful Kayla. He and Mary Beth Evans are good friends off the set, too, and that’s wonderful. They love being named a supercouple, and they do make a point to show up together to awards and things like that. They always win for the cutest television couple, and that’s a big deal.
9. Fans Love Them
Fans are not amused that he is leaving the show, either. He just celebrated his 33rd year of being Patch, even if he was gone a few times over the years. He’s been someone fans have loved for a long time, and they’ve been all over Twitter making sure he knows that.
10. Days isn’t His Only Soap
Aside from his role on Days, he’s been on a few other soaps. Did you know he was the original Stefan Cassadine on General Hospital, for instance? Did you know he was on the hit show the Young and the Restless for a few years, too? These soaps like to borrow actors from one another, but we totally get it when you look at how good they are together. He’s a man we will all miss, and not just on Days.
