What We Know about Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman So Far

BlacKkKlansman already looks like it’s a film that’s going to inspire a lot of people to speak up and speak their mind with great fervor. Spike Lee has never shied away from making controversial movies, as it’s kind of been his M.O. for a long time now. He wants you to get into the films he makes and to think about things and how they correlate with real life, since several of his films could actually BE real life if things turned out a certain way. But the gist of it is that this film is going to be something that is meant to shake people up a bit and really get them to think about what’s going on in the world today and how we as a nation need to handle this issue.

There are a lot of things that can be derived from the film so far but here are just a few that might seem pertinent.

This is part of American history.

The thing is, this actually happened. The real Ron Stallworth came to the set and passed around the KKK card he was given upon becoming a member, so to speak. The rise of the Klan was and still is a dark mark on American history no matter what people say, and it remains a stain that is best not forgotten simply because to do so would be to invite a repeat of the horrors that people of color had to go through during the Klan’s existence. While it still exists in some form the violent acts that were committed back then are not as prominent now.

Adam Driver will be playing “White Ron”.

Driver is the kind of actor that really manages to pull the best out of everyone around him. His other roles that he’s played in have been either comical or so flat out serious that one can imagine that he’s taken himself so deeply into character that coming back might take some actual work. His costars have expressed that he’s great to work with however and can bring out the best in them without hardly trying. In this film he’ll be playing “White Ron” since it would have taken a white man to infiltrate the KKK even if it was a black man doing all the talking, wheeling and dealing. The partnership on this would have been intense it seems since “White Ron” would have had to be carefully schooled in everything so that going in blind wouldn’t have been necessary. The KKK has never been known to be entirely charitable to those that attempted to mock their ideals, and thinking about someone trying to tear them down from the inside leaves horrible thoughts of what they would do if the guy was discovered.

Topher Grace is making a serious comeback.

Remember him? Topher has been in a lot of productions, but only a few that really put him front and center in the action and made him a memorable face. This time around however he’ll be playing the villain as he takes on the role of the Grand Wizard of the KKK. It could be as he’s getting older that he’s finally mounting an impressive comeback that could really revitalize his career.

It’s going to be a movie that many people watch just to see what happens, but it’s also going to be interesting to witness at least a part of history.
