MoviePass is Now Taking Stakes in Movies with “Gotti” Starring John Travolta

It looks like we’ll be seeing Gotti on the big screen, after all. A deal just came through for Gotti filmmakers that will allow a wide release instead of a VOD release. MoviePass Ventures has announced that it has taken an equity stake at Kevin Connelly’s Gotti, a movie that was going to be released under Lionsgate Premiere until the filmmakers decided to exercise the buy-back clause.

Gotti is the story of New York City’s most infamous mobster, the head of the Gambino crime family, John Gotti. The movie is currently scheduled to get its wide release on June 15 with Sunrider Productions under Vertical Entertainment.

This deal will be MoviePass Ventures second film rights deal. Earlier this year, the company acquired American Animals alongside The Orchard. MoviePass Ventures works under MoviePass, a movie ticket service that gives moviegoers subscription options when it comes to buying tickets for movie theaters. The goal of MoviePass Ventures is to help independent films find more success in the theatrical window by leveraging the millions of subscribers that it already has. As MoviePass drives millions in traffic to the theaters, its independent movie arm hopes to collect revenue in more creative ways.

According to Mitch Lowe, CEO of MoviePass, Gotti is just the right kind of movie that they were hoping to assist when they first started MoviePass Ventures. It’s a great film that deserves more viewers, and MoviePass Ventures is there to make it happen by offering existing MoviePass subscribers access to perks such as exclusive tickets to premiere events, tickets to private screenings, and possibly any other events that can be related to the film. It’s a win-win situation for the subscribers, the filmmakers, and MoviePass as well. Everyone is getting something out of the whole deal, which is exactly what MoviePass envisioned when it started in 2011.

John Gotti will be portrayed by John Travolta. The movie is directed by Kevin Connolly and written by Lem Dobbs and Leo Rossi. The biographical crime drama will tell the story of Gotti and his son and the relationship that was created in the background of a life of crime. Gotti lived and died by the mob code, and incidentally, his son refused to live that life. At the peak of their power, the Gambino family was the largest and most influential crime organization in all of the U.S. Gotti’s personality eventually landed him the title of mob boss, and he continued to be so until he passed away in his cell from cancer. That happened as late as 2002. Gotti Jr. was supposed to inherit the family’s crime business, but Gotti Jr. had a different direction for his life and completely abandoned crime in 1999.

The movie also stars Kelly Preston as Gotti’s wife Victoria and Spencer Rocco Lofranco as John Gotti Jr. Othere stars include Stacy Keach, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Chris Mulkey, Lydia Hull, and Ella Bleu Travolta as Angel Gotti. The movie is a family affair for the Travoltas as well, and you can see them all on screen on June 15.
