Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan in a movie together–what could possibly go wrong? Everything apparently. In their new movie, Ideal Home, Rudd and Coogan stars as a gay couple that suddenly finds themselves the caretaker of a young kid. The story line is fairly interesting enough to get us curious, and Rudd and Coogan are incredibly funny guys, but something doesn’t fit quite right.
In the trailer, we are shown that Rudd and Coogan’s characters are well to do. They work. They don’t always get along. They love each other. We see it, but we don’t necessarily feel it. You can watch the trailer, and you’ll probably immediately forget what you saw. But one thing you won’t forget is the lack of chemistry between the two characters. It picks up a little bit better towards the end, but by that time it’s a bit too late. Rudd is sadly unconvincing as Coogan’s partner, regardless of how well he rocks his hairdo. Coogan is all right at this point, but we can’t help but imagine him as if he’s about to burst out into a Hamlet 2 number.
There’s a slightly good chance that the film might be saving the bigger laughs for the feature, or they may just be going for something else altogether. A lot of Rudd’s comedy is usually traced with some kind feel-good quality that redeems whatever lack of laughs there may be. We think this might happen in the film, so we’ll give it a try regardless. It also helps that Jake McDorman is in the film, albeit behind bars, just because he’s Jake McDorman.
Nothing that Rudd or Coogan does could ever turn us into non-fans. They deserve it, much like Ideal Home probably deserves a chance. We’re not sure if we’ll ever get the chance to watch it on the big screen, though, as there’s no U.S. release date as of yet. Ideal Home is set to premiere in Australia on June 21.
