The last time we saw Ron Perlman in a blockbuster film, he was virtually unrecognizable. That was already a couple of years ago in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It’s nice to finally see his talents playing something “normal” for once. One of his latest projects, The Escape of Prisoner 614, shows Perlman like we haven’t seen him in quite a while. He plays the corrupt sheriff of a small town, who is set to put two new and young deputies, Martin Starr and Jake McDorman, under his cold-blooded control. The story revolves around the escape of a prisoner, as played by George Sample III, who swears that he was wrongly convicted. It’s up to the two deputies to ultimately decide this escaped prisoner’s fate, but that’s before Perlman’s character could decide for them first.
Lionsgate has recently released the first trailer for the film, and it looks very promising to say the least. The plot is simple, but sometimes that’s just what the movie might need to highlight the characters and the comedy. Perlman’s character looks tough, but so does McDorman’s deputy. Starr won’t be left behind as well, as his comedic chops are always on point. The trailer gives us bits and pieces of the Western action–as it is a modern western after all–and it’s enough to get us utterly excited about the film.
The film was written, directed, and produced by Zach Golden, and The Escape of Prisoner 614 will be his first full-length directorial debut. If veteran Perlman believed in the project enough to pursue it, we’re putting our faith in that it’s actually good. And from the looks of the trailer, we think we’re going to get more fun than we’re expecting. The film’s release date is set on April 27.
