Bill Maher saying that “I looked up to you” to Geraldo Rivera tended to make this interview just a little tense. Fox News was definitely on blast when it came to discussing which news stations tell the truth and which ones really like to make up whatever they want to report. Watching people tear at each other in such a polite way is kind of like watching people whipping each other with wet spaghetti noodles. Geraldo has been seen as controversial for a long time now, and Bill Maher has his own list of issues in the past according to who you talk to. Listening to them go at it and justifying their own viewpoints is kind of cringe-worthy simply because you can imagine that after the broadcast they’re going to talk about these things in a nice and respectful way simply because to do otherwise would stir the pot.
If they’re friends behind the scenes then that’s great, but it’s obvious that they won’t agree on Trump any time soon, and that’s the right of any American. Trump is not universally liked, even if the economy is humming along it’s his character that people don’t like at this moment. If the country is going to be seen as operating as it needs to be then that’s great, if it’s because of Trump then so be it, but his character is that of a man that seems to lean so heavily on his cabinet that he fops most of the load off onto other people while paying the lip service that he needs to in order for his people to defend him. Everyone from Huckabee Sanders down to Geraldo seems willing to die before admitting that Trump is anything but a jerk. It doesn’t matter if he states anything that people will disagree with as often as possible, those that are invested in his time as president will never once admit that he’s doing anything that’s wrong.
Give Geraldo props, he does seem to notice that Trump is doing some things that don’t make sense. But otherwise he’s Trump’s friend and therefore is going to defend him and make excuses for him. He does tend to think that Trump is a little over the top and that’s for certain, but he’ll still defend him, and you can see that Maher just doesn’t know why. Unfortunately in any conflict there are going to be those on both sides that have their heroes and will refuse to see anything good in those that are lauded by their enemies or by those that they consider friends. The issue isn’t whether Geraldo is defending Trump when it comes to anything he says, it’s that he’ll blindly follow a man that will act as though he’s king of the civilized world and allow his inexperience to lead the way rather than take the advice of those that have been there for a while. Were Trump to do this then perhaps he’d be able to win more people over.
Until that miracle happens though people will continue to be at odds.
