There’s been no real explanation why Jeremy Saulnier will be exiting his duties as co-director on True Detective after just 2 episodes other than scheduling issues, but that seems a valid reason all the same. Saulnier seemed like he was ready to make a go of season 3 alongside Nic Pizzolatto for the duration but hey, things happen. Instead, Daniel Sackheim, who’s known for directing The Americans, will be stepping in to help out. It might make for a slightly different show given that everyone’s style is their own and is bound to be something other than what some people are used to, but it might also be more well-received simply because of that reason.
This at least solves one of the biggest holdups for the production since the show was looking for directors in order to get started. Now that they’ve been found the show can get going once again and fans can continue to enjoy the show as they’ve been doing since season 1. Out of all the shows that have been coming out in the past few years this one has been one of those that has had a kind of up and down feel to it. Fans haven’t exactly hated it but there have been moments when the fans weren’t into it as much as they were when the show first came out. It’s easy to believe that every show is going to run into some snags and that some problems are going to arise but finding a director for the show would have been something that would have kept it on the shelf for longer than it’s already been there.
Fans have been waiting for True Crime to come back for a while now and will finally get to see what they wanted when the two directors get moving and get the show rolling again. There’s no way to tell if the two directors are really going to be sticking around after season 3 but it’s worth it to see. After all, people need to get their crime show fix or they might go watch another network, and ratings just can’t take that since the fans are needed to keep shows going. If you can remember there have been plenty of shows that have come and gone just because fans didn’t decide they were worth that much. The authenticity of a crime show and the faithful adherence to the many tenets that make it up are a big part of what people look for. This means that any director that wants to come and try their luck with such a show has to be willing and able to keep up with the stories and display them in a manner that makes sense and caters to what people want.
Sackheim and Pizzolatto seem to have things under control however and should be able to bring forth a third season that should be able to entertain and excite the fans just enough that they’ll keep watching. With the cast they have on hand their chances should be even better when it comes to keeping the fans happy.
