Nowadays, networks are overflowing with automobile-related shows, their dramas, and triumphs. But back in 2003, there really wasn’t much of reality TV when it comes to motorcycles. American Chopper was truly one of a kind and created an entirely new fan base. Paul Teutul Sr., the star of the show, is going through some heat lately for fraud issues relating to his show’s network. While the star never cease to be in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, he’ll always be remember as the guy who brought us all the coolest bikes back then. Here are 5 things you might not know about Paul that may help you understand who he really is.
Passionate about steel
It’s not difficult to believe that Paul’s passion has always been steel. Before working in the motorcycle industry, he actually worked in the steel industry. Once, he even owned a steel company in Rock Tavern, New York. Later on in his life, we’ll see this passion translated into motorcycles, a lucky transition for us, who like to observe steel work.
Merchant Marine
During the Vietnam War, Paul served his country in an unusual way. He served in the Merchant Marines, which is a fleet of merchant vessels that may be operated by the government. While he many not have enlisted completely, he can say that at least he did something to help his country out while in need.
Humble beginnings
The entire franchise of American Choppers started in a garage, believe it or not. It was all driven by Paul Sr.’s passion about steel work and motorcycles, of course. The first bike that was ever built was called “True Blue.” Paul and his crew showed off the newly built motorcycle in 1999’s Biketoberfest in Dayton Beach. Everything else fell into place after that.
Drinking problem
We can imagine why Paul Sr. might succumb to alcoholism. After being in the show for so long, Paul Sr., probably went through so much in the show that can probably drive even the best people to drink. He went into rehab for a bit, but it didn’t seem to help out much. A lot of his issues are reflected a lot into his family dynamic.
Family feud
That leads us to our last tidbit about Paul Teutul Sr. Many people are probably aware of the highly publicized firing of Paul Jr. from the show. That led to a lot of discord within the show itself, and of course, a lot of anger towards father and son. But the feud goes a lot deeper than what the show touched on. Specifically, Paul Sr. went out of his way to find loopholes in their contract so he can legally let go of his son, without pay. During this time, he also failed to attend his son’s wedding. Of course he was invited, but he refused to show up regardless. Now that he has grandkids, the nature has changed a bit between the father and son–for the better.
