One has to wonder if the Simpson’s writing room has a time traveler in their midst since predicting the USA’s Olympic gold medal win in curling came about eight years ago with Homer, Marge, and Principal Skinner at the forefront of the charge. You might continue to chalk it up to coincidence but the Simpsons crew have been on a roll when it comes to predicting just what’s going to happen in the future. Sure, they didn’t get the third-place medalists right, but who cares? They predicted that the USA would win gold in the curling competition, which no one thought was going to happen. If you’re not convinced they also predicted Trump taking office, the Lady Gaga halftime show, and the Disney-Fox merger. Is there anything else they need to do for people to believe that they have a gift of some sort?
It’s very true that some people are just really good at guessing, and there could have even been a pool going behind the scenes as to what would happen, but the fact that these episodes were run at all shows a lot of confidence that these things were going to happen. It’s hard to explain really but with a show like the Simpsons there tends to be a lot of ideas that get thrown around and don’t stick, so labeling the ones that do as proof positive of being able to tell the future is kind of stretching it just a bit. It’s impressive honestly, and it seems like they might be playing high stakes gambling if they were wrong, but overall it’s a cartoon that a lot of people enjoy, and one that’s gotten the future right a few times so far.
The Simpsons is in its 29th season now, something that a lot of people couldn’t have possible predicted would ever happen. But it’s been going strong for a long time now, even when the ratings dipped and people tended to move on to other things, everyone’s favorite family was still there. Through the reruns and the down times people have continued to watch the show and get a good chuckle and even an uproarious laugh at the antics of the characters. But yes, thinking that they can tell the future is kind of hard to fathom, at least until you see what’s been done so far. It’s very easy to scoff and keep on doing it at the expense of the show, thinking that they’ve just gotten lucky. But there’s a point when luck isn’t enough of an explanation and steps over that line into something else that is hard to understand but seems to work on a fairly irregular basis.
There might have been signs that could have been read, subtle things that might have hinted at such events coming, but you’d still have to be extremely observant to really notice them. Perhaps those working in the writer’s room for the Simpsons are just experts when it comes to reading the weft and weave of society.
