‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’ is a British television series that was originally aired on November 11, 2015, on ITV Encore. This British period crime drama is set in 19th century London and is a reimagining of the myth of Frankenstein. The main character is Inspector John Marlott who is solving mysterious crimes in the English capital. There were six episodes in the first season and ITV announced in June 2016 that the series was returning for a second season of six episodes in 2017. Netflix has now picked up the series and it will be shown in the United States and other territories. Here are five things you probably don’t know about ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’.
1. Benjamin Ross and Barry Langford Are the Creators
The two creators of this series are Barry Langford and Benjamin Ross. Langford is a director, producer, and businessman who is best-known for his television work during the 1960s and 1970s. He also worked as a music manager for major stars, including Tom Jones and David Bowie. Other notable works of the writer and director Benjamin Ross include ‘The Young Poisoner’s Handbook’, ‘RKO 281′, ‘Guilty Hearts’, and Poppy Shakespeare.
2. Sean Bean is the Leading Male in the Series
The lead role of Inspector John Marlott is played by famous British actor Sean Bean in both seasons of the series. Sean Bean has starred in many television series and films. He is particularly well-known for playing Boromir in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy of films and Ned Stark in the HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’. Others who star in ‘The Chronicles of Frankenstein’ include Tom Ward, Vanessa Kirby, Anna Maxwell Martin, Richie Campbell, Ed Stoppard, Robbie Gee, Ryan Sampson, and Eloise Smyth.
3. Laurence Fox and Maeve Dermody Joined the Cast for Season 2
Many of the cast members from season one reprised their roles for the second season of the series. There were also some new cast members in the most recent season. These included Laurence Fox and Maeve Dermody. Fox is playing the role of Frederick Dipple who is a socialite who has an interest in automata. Dermody is portraying Esther Rose who is a seamstress that Dipple has contracted to make clothes for his mechanical creations. Another new character is ‘Automaton’, a mechanical creation, that is played by Victoria Emslie.
4. Alex Dabassi Directed the Second Season
The first season of ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles was directed entirely by Benjamin Ross, who is also one of the creators of the show. However, he stepped down from his directorial role for the second season and was replaced by Alex Dabassi.
5. Mary Shelley is Played by Anna Maxwell Martin
No reimagining of Frankenstein would be complete without Mary Shelley, who is the creator of the fictional character and the writer of the original book of the same name. In the first season of this series, the role of Mary Shelley is played by Anna Maxwell Martin. This English actress has also appeared in ‘Bleak House’ and ‘Poppy Shakespeare’. She is married to Roger Michell and has two children.
