Who doesn’t love Uno? Especially when you’re the one who gets to play ”Reverse, reverse back to me, reverse again, draw two, draw two more, uno, draw four”. There’s just something about going out after being able to lay down five or six cards that’s so much fun! The look on your opponent’s face when you start laying all those cards down is always priceless!
Well, the sequel to the ever-popular card game of Uno has finally arrived! It doesn’t take very much to guess what it’s called either! That’s right! It’s called Dos! How did you ever guess? The classic card game from Mattel is a have-to have card game for impromptu get-togethers as well as those which have been planned. For almost a half century, UNO has been a mainstay of family game nights everywhere. As a child, you’ve probably played hundreds of games of UNO and have probably even passed the game on to your children. Well, now you will have the option of playing UNO’s new successor.
UNO has had a few previous spin-offs, which typically have kept the same game play or a version thereof, with only a primary enhancement or change. These spin-offs have actually done fairly well for Mattel, but now they are ecstatic to be releasing UNO’s true successor, DOS. DOS has actually been in development for two years according to Mattel’s head of games unit, Ray Adler. However, he and the rest of Mattel are very happy with the results. One of the reasons it took so long to develop was that the games unit wanted DOS to be different enough from playing UNO.
So the game generally plays similarly to UNO, except there’s a big twist. Want a hint? It’s in the name of game! Players still use the familiar system of matching colored and numbered cards to compete. The difference is that they can now make two stacks of cards, instead of one, allowing them to throw down two cards at a time. In addition, players win by making enough points, not by getting rid of all their cards first. Nonetheless, as with UNO, when a player is down to two cards in the new game, shouting ”DOS” is a must! If another player realizes a player only has two cards and says ”DOS” first, the player then has to pick up two more cards.
DOS has a new, shiny look and new, enhanced rules, but it still retains the same old brutality of UNO. After all, that’s definitely one of the reasons UNO has been so popular. It’s so much fun to get to be the one who plays so brutally. On the other hand, it’s not necessarily so much fun when the brutality happens to you.
DOS is the first time UNO has been totally reinvented since the game originally came out in 1971. Yes! Can you believe it came out that long ago? That’s almost fifty years and the game is still going strong. It’s great that Mattel has seemingly found a way to honor the old game while introducing players to brand new way of playing.
Interested? DOS will go on sale exclusively at Target for only $5.99 on March 4. Then in August the game will also be available through other retailers as well. However, why wait that long? Surely there’s a Target near you! Let’s play DOS!
