Steven S. DeKnight has earned a reputation as writer and creator of shows and films that have the capacity to capture the attention of viewers and keep them coming back for more. With the STARZ series, Spartacus returning with a newly added sub-title – Vengeance – the spotlight is once again on DeKnight and his rapidly spinning creative mind. While fans get ready for the second season of Spartacus, there is so much left unknown about the show’s creator. In order to bring you up to speed on the person behind the brilliance of Spartacus, Dare Devil and more, we decided to share five interesting facts that will help you get to know Steven a little better.
1. He is a Millville, New Jersey Native
Well, everybody has to come from somewhere. While we tend to get to know people after they have made their impact on the world and associated their current state with where they come from, it does not usually work that way. Many times, these great thinkers, creators, and innovators of their craft come from small obscure places that are unknown to most. This is definitely the case for Steven S. DeKnight, who is from a little small town in New Jersey called Millville.
2. Minimal Exposure to Cinema Early in Life
For someone who makes such as splash in film, you would suspect that Steven was exposed to the world of cinema at a very early age, but the truth is that the town he grew up in was so small that it did not have its own movie theatre. Not that is small. While this little setback limited Steven’s exposure, it did not completely stifle it. He talks about his 30-minute bike trips to the next town to catch a movie. Now, that is being committed to something you find passion in.
3. Meager Beginnings
DeKnight says that he would not say that his family was poor, but they definitely had a situation in which they often lived from one paycheck to the next. Both of his parents were employed by local factories and while the work was steady, it did not pay a lot. There was no way a family was going to get rich working in the factories. Fortunately for Steven and his parents, they had a son who was a dreamer and visionary – possessing the capacity to transform those ideas into films and television shows that people love to see.
4. Writing and Directing Was Not His First Passion
At first glance, the suggestion that Steven DeKnight had a passion other than writing and directing films would come across as ridiculous. Steven sort of laughs off the idea that writing was his initial passion. He is what kid do you know that has a passion to be a writer. He admits that his first passion was to become an actor. In fact, Steven did a lot of performances during his high school years, but as he struck out for Hollywood, things would change.
5. It Was the Lean Years that Led to a Change in Focus
As with almost everyone who arrives in Hollywood looking to make it big as an actor, there were some lean years that made him second guess his passion, but it during those lean years that he was able to develop his writing and create opportunities that did not initially exist. Steven has this unbelievable work ethic that underwrites his success and it was that work ethic that shifted things for him in his career.
