There are a lot of people who should remember the name of Steven Soderbergh. After all, he was the film-maker behind a number of well-known movies, with examples ranging from Traffic and the Ocean’s Trilogy to Contagion and Magic Mike. However, while Soderbergh proved to be both a commercial and a critical success, he lost his enthusiasm for making feature films for a time, which is why he went into a hiatus from 2013 to 2016. However, Soderbergh has since returned to making feature films, as shown by the fact that he has made a horror movie called Unsane.
Unsane is set to have its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, which is coming soon. However, not a lot of news has come out so far, meaning that there isn’t much information that is available to interested individuals. Still, Unsane has stirred up a fair amount of interest from Soderbergh fans for the simple reason that it will be the first time that he has made a horror movie. After all, while both Kafka and Contagion had what could be considered horror elements, they were not horror movies but rather a mystery thriller and a medical thriller. As a result, it is perhaps unsurprising that there are a lot of people out there who are curious about how Soderbergh will do with this particular genre.
Content-wise, one of the stars of Unsane, Jay Pharaoh, has said that the movie that will a “reality-type horror.” In particular, it is interesting to note that he made a comparison to Get Out, which was so well-received that it managed to make more than $254 million at the box office in spite of a $4.5 million production budget. For those who are unfamiliar with the movie, it starred Daniel Kaluuya as a black photographer named Chris Washington who has agreed to meet his white girlfriend Rose Armitage’s family for the first time. However, the experience turns out to be more than a little bit unsettling, not least because Chris meets a number of black people at the Armitage family estate who are behaving in a rather odd manner. Over the course of the movie, this culminates in Chris finding out that the Armitage family has been transplanting the brains of white people into the bodies of black people that they have kidnapped, with the result that the consciousness of the black people become trapped in their own bodies where they are helpless to respond, which is an unusual but nonetheless deeply unsettling kind of horror. As a result, if Unsane is indeed similar to Get Out, it could well prove to be something that manages to stand out.
Curiously, it should be mentioned that Unsane seems to have been filmed using the camera on a smartphone. Based on the photos that have been released as a teaser of sorts, this choice does not seem to have affected the general quality of the footage in a negative manner, but it will be interesting to see how it influences the overall look of the movie. Fortunately, the premiere is happening soon, meaning that a general release shouldn’t be that far off into the future.
