Harold and George are the school pranksters and while they’re typically thought of as funny their principal Mr. Krupp is about ready to ruin their lives essentially when they somehow hypnotize him with a ring from a cereal box. Thinking that he would be a nice person if he were someone else they convince him that he is Captain Underpants, a comic book hero that both boys agree he resembles. When a real mad scientist comes to town posing as a teacher however Captain Underpants is unable to stop him initially, and the town’s children are almost turned into humorless zombies. Thanks to the development of superpowers though Captain Underpants saves the day.
It’s a very weird story but people seem to like it so hey, to each their own.
10. Chris Farley was the first choice to play the hero.
Unfortunately when he passed away the idea was scrapped. It could have been made into a movie as early as 1997.
9. The subtitle doesn’t mean much.
The subtitle reads “The First Epic Movie” but this doesn’t mean much since there isn’t a sequel in the works and the books were labeled as such in sequential order.
8. This is the second time Kevin Hart has done a voice acting part.
His first part was in The Life of Pets as the cottontail in the sewers. This part was a little more subdued thankfully.
7. It was one of Dreamworks’ lowest grossing movies.
It didn’t really help that it came out around the same time as Cars 3 and Despicable Me 3, both movies that were a part of popular franchises that had already gained a large fan base.
6. It was released on the 20th anniversary of the books’ release.
It might have been possible to release it much sooner if more interest had been given in the adaptation, but the loss of Farley was kind of tough.
5. Wierd Al Yankovic is mentioned several times in the books.
He’s mentioned in a lot of the source novels and he even sings the theme song to the movie. This kind of seems like something he’d enjoy.
4. This was the last animated film that Dreamworks did before Universal Pictures took over.
It’s yet to be seen what Universal is going to do now that it’s running things, but it could be interesting given their track record.
3. This is the sixth Dreamworks movie to be adapted from a kids’ book.
The first five were Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, Rise of the Guardians, Home, and The Boss Baby. All of those films did okay at least in the box office but obviously Shrek was the one that hit the home run time and again.
2. This is the studio’s 31st film adaptation.
This might give hope to a lot of aspiring authors that there could be at least a chance that their work could make it to film if they’re daring enough.
1. This is Dreamworks first superhero movie since Megamind.
It’s been about seven years so it was past time to see another animated hero movie.
Like I said, weird film. But if people liked it so be it.
