America’s Next Top Model has had a long run. However, it is interesting to note that while its success is self-evident, it has not managed to bring that same success to its participants. After all, few of the participants from America’s Next Top Model have gone on to become successful models, which to be fair, is rather like how few of the participants from American Idol have gone on to become successful singers. Still, even if this is the case, it is nonetheless interesting to look into why America’s Next Top Model has not managed to produce a lot of successful models.
Why Is America’s Next Top Model Not an Accurate Depiction of Modeling?
In part, this seems to be because a lot of the participants on America’s Next Top Model were never under consideration in the first place. For example, runway models are expected to possess a certain height, as shown by the fact that the standard runway model has a measurement of something like 5’9”. As a result, a lot of the participants on America’s Next Top Model never had much of a chance in the first place because they fall short in this regard. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that runway models start modeling at an early age, meaning that a lot of the participants on America’s Next Top Model had the odds further stacked against them because they are too old. Finally, a lot of fashion houses prefer to choose new faces as opposed to famous, familiar ones for a sense of freshness, which is something that excludes the people who have competed on America’s Next Top Model. Based on these factors, it is no wonder that the participants on the series have such a hard time breaking into the world of modeling.
With that said, it should also be noted that America’s Next Top Model is focused to a significant extent on the fantasy of modeling, which remains popular in the present time. As a result, the series doesn’t actually have much to do with the realities of modeling. For proof, look at how the participants live in gorgeous mansions, which have nothing to do with what actual aspiring models can expect from their lives. Likewise, look at how the competition is set up as well as what happens over the course of the competition, which have much more to do with the popular image of modeling as opposed to the realities of modeling. Effectively, this means that the participants are not taught the skills needed to make it as a model, thus stacking the odds against them that much more.
Summed up, there is nothing wrong with watching America’s Next Top Model for fun. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that some of its participants have actually used it as a launch pad for their acting careers. However, it is important to remember that the series is focused on catering to people who want to indulge in the fantasy of what being a model is like, which in turn, means that it is not exactly the most reliable sources for the reality of that particular experience.
