A Hellboy Board Game is Arriving in 2018

The era of the comic books is far from over in various forms of media and the fact that there is a Hellboy board game coming out in 2018 is proof enough. The red-skinned brute has become a favorite of fans ever since his first appearance in the comics was launched in 1993. Since then he’s managed to spawn a couple of movies and a whole boatload of merchandise that people can’t seem to get enough of. Personally I thought the movies could have used a little bit of work but they were enjoyable and kind of fun, enough to warrant seeing the second one, which left me with mixed feelings but not hating the story.

The board game is apparently going to be a co-operative experience and can be played by up to four characters and will feature both the heroes and the villains from the Hellboy comics. It should be a fun game for fans that are into the comic books, but unless you know who Hellboy is and what he’s all about you might not get much out of it. Novelty items like this are great for fans and for the manufacturers since the fans get something that has the image of one of their heroes on it and the manufacturers get to sell a product that people actually want and hopefully make money off of it. That’s the kind of win-win that any business wants.

Hellboy is kind of an odd character though. He looks like a bad guy but acts like a good guy, as he was raised to be by his father, according the movies. Having never read the comic books I won’t comment on what source material made it into the films at this point. Fans are going to have to hold on and buckle in though since Hellboy is coming back to the theaters eventually. David Harbour, who played Hopper from Stranger Things, will be taking on the role of the big red-skinned hero and from all sources I’ve seen thus far this new Hellboy is going to be something different than what we’ve seen before.

As grotesque and disturbing as some of the scenes in the movies have been the rating has still not allowed it to be the absolute gore-fest that Hellboy is known for. It’s been more or less suited to show to families and toned down so as not to disturb anyone or cause them to retch in their seats. This new Hellboy is going to be a proper horror story it would seem, and if that’s the case then the floor might run red before the ending credits. To be honest I think I would prefer if it did, since that seems to be the nature of Hellboy and the world he occupies. Movies that are supposed to be more hardcore don’t need to be toned down for the sake of the viewer. If the viewer doesn’t like it then there’s always the option of not going to see the movie. But if the source material calls for something harder then by all means go with it.
