Five Important Lessons Disney’s “Andi Mack” Teaches Us

The Disney Channel has long been a network that features shows that are both entertaining and educational. It is doing its part to help strengthen the fiber of America by reinforcing morality and values through its program offerings. Life is filled with choices, and some of the decisions that we make profoundly affect our lives. We are also deeply impacted by the things that other people who are close to us do. “Andi Mack” is a series that teaches us important life lessons, and here are five of them.

1. Your world can change forever in a moment’s time

Andi learns a family secret when her older sister moves back home with she and her parents. Bex is a free spirited woman, and just the fact that she came home changed the family dynamics, but this was just the beginning of the changes for Andi. She found out that Bex is actually her mother. She learns that many things that she believed to be true were not. Her life changed forever within a few moments when she discovered the truth about Bex and if has a tremendous impact upon her life.

2. Growing up should be an adventure

Watching he show teaches parents an important life lesson.We see the struggles that Andi has when she learns the hard truth about her birth mother. Children need protection, but they also need to learn coping skills to deal with the inevitable ups and downs that life sends their way. As they journey, each new day also brings adventure and new experiences. Even though Andi is just thirteen, she feels the first twinges of young love and we’re privileged to watch this unfold. Andi shows us that life is about learning, changing and growing. It is heartwarming to watch young Andi fall in love.

3. Forgiveness and second chances are an important part of relationships

When Andi’s cool sister Bex moves home, the two have a chance to work on their sister bond, but when Andi learns that Bex is her mother, she feels confused about the relationship. While this is normal, Andi has some soul searching to do. She isn’t really Bex’ sister and the relationship has forever changed. Andi must learn how to forgive and move on whether it is with her mother, or continuing to view Bex as a sister.

4. We all need time and space to adapt to changes

When Andi learns about Bex, it takes a while for her to come to grips with the new knowledge that she has gained. This is a big change for her and she needs her space and some time to process it in her mind. We learn that these things take time from their situation. Even though everyone involved may want the situation to resolve quickly and in a positive direction, this can’t always be the case. We are all just human and there are times when we just need to be alone to think and then we need time to adjust.

5. Even unconventional families can be loving and healthy

There are probably more families like Andi’s than there are traditional in most senses of the word As human beings living in an ever changing world, the term normal has taken on new meaning. Even though they are about as unconventional as you can get, there is love on all fronts. Everyone is concerned with Andi having he best possible life and all that she needs to be healthy and happy. Good people make up this family and we see them pulling together, despite their differences to give Andi the best start in life. Her grandparents served as her parents because they knew that Andi needed to have this stability in her life. They didn’t intend to mislead her, but rather to protect her and make her feel safe, secure and loved.
