Logan has earned a reputation for being one of the best superhero movies that can be found out there. In part, this is because it managed to earn more than $600 million at the box office, which is much more than its $97 million budget. However, it is important to note that Logan had a positive reception from most critics, who often cited its resemblance to a western rather than a more conventional superhero movie. Regardless, Logan was a huge success, which in turn, means that there is enormous interest in a spin-off of some sort.
Could There Be a X-23 Spin-off?
Of course, a simple and straightforward follow-up to Logan is complicated by the fact that the titular character is dead. Furthermore, the actor Hugh Jackman has stated that said movie was the last time that he would be playing the character, which is rather reasonable considering that he has played the character in nine separate movies over the course of 17 years. As a result, most of the interest in a Logan spin-off has been focused on the character of X-23, who was played by Dafne Keen.
There are a number of reasons to believe that a spin-off centered around X-23 would not be impossible. For example, the director of Logan James Mangold has expressed a strong interest in doing such a spin-off. Furthermore, he has backed up his interest by pointing at the success of Wonder Woman, which he believes to be a sign that the audiences are ready to watch superhero movies with female leads rather than male leads. This information should be examined in light of the fact that 20th Century Fox seems to be prepared to experiment with its X-Men movies, as shown by the fact that the upcoming New Mutants movies will be horror movies in much the same sense that Logan was a western. Combined with the widespread praise for Dafne Keen’s abilities as an actress, these factors mean that a X-23 movie could well materialize at some point in the future.
What Can X-Men Fans Expect from Such a Spin-off?
With that said, the simplest and most straightforward setup for a X-23 movie would be a continuation of the events that happened in Logan. After all, there are a lot of viewers who have an existing emotional connection to the X-23 from that movie, meaning that they have a degree of investment of what happens to her as well as what she will go on to accomplish. While the setup for Logan means that there won’t be a lot of familiar faces in such a movie, there are more than enough X-Men characters to populate, particularly since 20th Century Fox doesn’t seem to have a lot of hesitation about making use of the more obscure among them.
However, it would not be impossible to see the X-23 movie be set in some other timeline, particularly since 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies are a complete and utter mess continuity-wise. That would be a waste of the potential provided by Logan, but on the plus side, it could mean X-23 interacting more with familiar characters, which would no doubt be a positive to some X-Men fans.
