Josie and the Pussycat’s did not receive much praise when it was released. It’s been lauded as one of the worst movies ever made but it definitely carried a larger message than people were willing to listen to at the time. The music industry seems bent on repeating and droning on with the same artists year after year in a binge of music styles that never seem to change until something and/or someone finally comes along to challenge the status quo. Josie and the Pussycats were kind of ahead of their time when it came to the industry and the idea that the music was far more important than the money it brought. In many ways they were pioneers that were forgotten the moment the film was over.
That’s too bad because the main message of the movie made a lot of sense. But it’s hard to make sense when all people see are dollar signs.
10. There are around 73 companies that have products placed in the movie.
That is a lot of product placement but if you’ve watched any movie in the past few years you’d know that it’s entirely possible.
9. Rachel Leigh Cook’s singing voice was dubbed.
Kay Hanley did the singing parts for RLC since none of the girls really had that much musical talent, at least not enough to be passable.
8. The girls had to go to band camp to at least make it look like they knew what they were doing.
None of them were able to play with any proficiency after the camp but their music was dubbed by Kay Handley and her band, Letters to Cleo.
7. Tara Reid and Carson Daly started dating during this movie.
They met during Carson Daly’s cameo and hit it off almost immediately.
6. Missi Pyle breaks the fourth wall briefly while on the airplane.
When her onscreen brother asks her why she’s even there she states that she was in the comic book. When he inquires further she says ‘nothing’.
5. The name of the boy band in this film is kind of ironic.
Du Jour is usually something that’s great at the time but is bound to become old and kind of passe very quickly.
4. Seth Green is a part of the boy band that’s featured.
I can see him being in a boy band that came and went, couldn’t you? Being that it was a spoof he was a good choice.
3. Every guy in the boy band was also in Can’t Hardly Wait.
Two of them were actually in the same band in the movie and were at each other’s throats for much of their time on stage.
2. The scene with the band brushing their teeth absolutely HAD to be in.
The powers that be in charge of Archie comics wanted the band to project at least some sort of wholesome image.
1. The film was originally PG-13 but was marketed with PG version.
It’s hard to believe but apparently there was a bit of profanity and sexual innuendo in a film called Josie and the Pussycats. The PG version was supposed to be more family friendly.
It was ahead of its time, but that time might have come and gone already. Maybe not, but we’ll see.
