Although there have been many pretenders to The Simpsons‘ animated sitcom throne, Bob’s Burgers has been the only one to come anywhere near close to taking it from them. The series, which follows the work-a-day lives of the eccentric Belcher family — including father Bob, mother Linda and kids Tina, Gene and Louise — as they desperately try and as often as not fail, to make ends meat in their family-run burger shop. And for the part eight seasons that it has been on the air, it has consistently proven to be one of the funniest, most endearing shows on TV.
And in the not-so-distant future, it will meake its way to the big screen. Earlier this week, Twentieth Century Fox announced that they will be making a film adaptation of the series, to be released in 2020.
Specifically, will be released on July 17th of that year, which is already proving to be a crowded summer at the box office. Assuming that nothing gets shifted around in the meantime, Bob’s Burgers will come out two weeks after Minions 2, one week after Indiana Jones 5 and one week before DC’s Green Lantern Corps. Regardless of how well received the series has been to date, that’s an awfully hard release date to work with.
Then again, this isn’t Fox’s first rodeo. They released The Simpsons Movie in July of 2007 to massive critical and box office success. They clearly are hoping to repeat that success with Bob’s Burgers, but that is already a tall order to fill.
On the subject of adapting the series into a film, series creator Loren Bouchard seems to be fully aware of the challenges ahead of him. He stated:
“We’re thrilled to be invited to bring Bob’s Burgers to the big screen. We know the movie has to scratch every itch the fans of the show have ever had, but it also has to work for all the good people who’ve never seen the show. We also know it has to fill every inch of the screen with the colors and the sounds and the ever so slightly greasy texture of the world of Bob’s — but most of all it has to take our characters on an epic adventure. In other words, it has to be the best movie ever made. But no pressure, right?!”
I, for one, can’t wait to see what shape the film takes. If its even half as good as The Simpsons Movie, let alone the series that it’s based off of, it will undoubtedly be one of 2020’s must-see movies.
