“Speechless” Season 2: Five Predictions after the Premiere

“Speechless” Season 2: Five Predictions after the Premiere

The ABC network’s comedy series “Speechless” is on for a second round and after watching the premiere, we gained a little insight into what may be coming up next. From the September 27th episode one of the new run, we gained a firm understanding that the creators of the show have played with words and “Speechless” is going to have a great deal to share with the world. Here are the five predictions that we make, based on the kickoff starter of season 2.

1. We’ll learn more about Maya and Jimmy this season

The first season gave us a good introduction to all the characters, but the second run shows promise of more fully developing the characters of Jimmy and Maya. We know that they can deliver comedy as well as the more serious side of the series, but there is so much that we don’t know about them. Bowie and Driver bring the characters to life and Maya has a steamroller personality because she must fight for the rights of her son with cerebral palsy while Jimmy just seems to carry on. This is the perfect time for a little more back history on the couple and we predict it will begin unfolding within the next few episodes.

2. The show will tackle social issues

Maya will continue to be the champion of JJ in taking on any person or agency that discriminates against him in any way, but the character will also make some mistakes along the way. We’ll see Maya make errors in judgment that will be challenged by other members of the family as well as by an outsider. We predict that
her gung-ho attitude may cause temporary blindness and that the character will have a learning moment when she discovers that she doesn’t know everything when it comes to JJ and that she needs to place more value on the input of her family members.

3. The show will pack each episode full of hard hitting content

If the premiere is any indicator of what is to come, we have seen how the creators and writing team delivered high on hard hitting content that is tempered with humor. We went from their home being tented for fumigation while they were asleep inside to the lot of them making jokes in their jammies in the middle of the street. The kickoff didn’t take a break in the action. We predict that this is the format that the show will continue to follow.

4. The family will undergo dramatic changes in their dynamics

We can see the show taking a turn here as the premiere gave the group a sample of what it was like to have JJ at summer camp. Having a family member with a disabling condition made it too easy to use this as an excuse for not carrying on with life and living it to the fullest. Maya made the decision that it’s time to get back on track. We see how DiMeos uses JJs cerebral palsy as an excuse to become a slacker. He’s not holding up his end when it comes to responsibilities and somewhere deep down, he knows it. We predict that Maya will start funneling her energies in some other directions, other than keeping he only focus on JJ.

5. Kenneth will become a main supporting character in season 2

The handwriting seems to be on the wall for JJ’s aide Kenneth to become more prominent and to gain a stronger supporting role this season. The character is enthusiastic and he gives a well-balanced performance that contains some humor to the show as well as very human moments. The character is becoming a friend of the family and our prediction is that we will learn more about him through the second season and he will become a staple to the show. He was the groundskeeper for the school who is the only character who has the guts to stand up to Maya and voice his real opinion.
