The Tokyo Game convention is basically a chance to unveil any new and upcoming games, much like a Comic Con, but on a slightly bigger level and obviously in a different location. The Japanese seem to get so completely into their cosplay that it’s simply amazing to look at. But there a number of rules that, like Comic Con, are very strict so as to keep people safe and allow them to have a good time. Here are some cosplay highlights from this year’s show:
Some of the characters almost resemble American figures but are definitely possessed of their own style and unique appearance. If you’re looking for accurate names then you might need to attend or look up the particulars.
One thing I’ve noticed about Japanese characters is that they’re so over the top sometimes that it looks absolutely comical despite the very serious nature of some characters.
This almost looks like another take on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and I wouldn’t be too surprised since the game has entered into more than a couple different cultures.
One thing, among many, that you can count on in Japanese pop culture is that somewhere, somehow, you will find a robotic-looking character.
The Japanese tend to enjoy emulating other cultures as well. It’s a very common thing that most cultures practice with their pop culture icons.
This almost looks like The Man In The Iron Mask meets Hellboy but I kind of doubt that’s what it is.
So apparently only men are able to bare their chest for the convention, which is good etiquette really. There are a lot of guidelines to follow.
Women have to be covered for modesty but can at least make the costumes look good so long as they’re not showing too much. Basically they just can’t be near to nude, which goes for the guys too.
Funny thing about Japanese cartoons, or at least it used to be this way, the larger the eyes the more trustworthy the character is, the smaller, the less appealing they are.
Kind of wondering if this person was caught in the middle of pulling their face mask up or down so they could see.
See? As long as the outfits are tasteful and do convey the character in a way that’s approved they’re still allowed. This might be borderline on the woman’s part but I think it still works.
Considering how many games and cartoons there are per country it’s hard to know who’s portraying what anymore. But at least they’re having fun.
This couple almost looks like something out of a Final Fantasy game, but since I don’t know for sure I won’t say for certain.
Now this is pretty easy to comment on since Chocobos, via Final Fantasy, have been a thing for quite a while.
There’s just something about going over the top on a regular basis that some folks tend to love.
So long as they’re having a good time it seems like a fun place to be, but trying to name every character is getting very difficult.
Kids today seem to know more about every last cartoon that’s on the TV than anyone, so it’s enough just to be impressed that they manage to come up with such great costumes.
It looks like fun, but I don’t think I could name a single character. Maybe I’m getting old.
