So, wow. Yeah. Gorbachev was in a Pizza Hut commercial, I have to admit that I did not know about this one, but that seems forgivable since when Gorbachev was still important I was still a kid. Plus when I think of pizza I don’t necessarily start thinking about politics. The last time I talked politics in a Pizza Hut was, well, never.
It’s interesting though how it always seems like the younger and the older generations are almost always in opposition with one another. Why is that? Could it be that the older generation has seen what has come before and simply knows from experience that one leader has that unfortunate chance of being like so many others that come in with good intentions and then compromise until they’re reviled for actions that they wouldn’t have condoned before their rise to power? Or is that the younger generation sees the old, antiquated ways as outdated and therefore no more use to the people?
Whatever the real reason behind the division it always seems to come down to someone of the older generation being the moderator, especially in TV and movies. This wise, usually older person will seek a compromise that everyone can agree upon and state it in the most simple manner possible. In this case it is the elderly woman sitting between the two men that manages to get them to reconcile over one very promising fact, that without Gorbachev they would not have Pizza Hut.
While I haven’t yet found out the truth behind that statement the chances are that Pizza Hut was making a push for a global market for some time before Gorbachev lent his presence to the commercial. When the older man stands and salutes Gorbachev with a slice of pizza I didn’t hesitate in rolling my eyes. It’s a great thing to go worldwide with a product but it’s also another thing to salute one’s leader with a greasy slice of pizza after berating him within earshot just seconds earlier.
I get the feeling that if someone did this to the current POTUS that Trump would be tweeting out how he got verbally assaulted in a Pizza Hut and had to set someone straight. You know, with a contingent of Secret Service agents all around and enough firepower to level a local Pizza Hut at his disposal. He’d come off as the big man and be lauded by his many supporters and possibly called a tyrant or a victim if someone bothered to rant and rave anywhere within earshot of him, even in a commercial. We all know by now that Trump doesn’t know how to keep his words to himself, if the NFL snafu that most recently sparked thanks to protests and his reaction to them is any indication.
But give credit to Gorbachev since back then, even if it was just a commercial, he played his part and didn’t get bent out of shape, at least not on camera, as a guy publicly berated him. I know, it’s a commercial, I get that point. But do you really think Trump would stay quiet?
