Rush Limbaugh is no stranger to controversy. In fact, he has built his longstanding career on being as controversial and as far to the right as humanly possible – something that is becoming increasingly more difficult as each day passes. His latest diatribe surrounding the recent devastation in Texas and Louisiana as a result of Hurricane, and more importantly, the path and projections of one of the largest and most destructive hurricanes in U.S. History, Hurricane Irma, has some people scratching their heads. There are many, including myself, who believe that extreme right wing media has become excessively dangerous, and this latest diatribe by Limbaugh shows how.
I am a strong proponent of the First Amendment of the Constitution, and I am not attempting to encroach on Limbaugh’s right to say what he wants, but what I am concerned about here is the massive platform he has been given on which to say it.
While Limbaugh starts his segment concerning the storm off with a declaration that he is not a meteorologist nor a climatologist, he then begins to share his thoughts as to why Floridians should not be evacuating their homes and communities. He points to something that has a sliver of truth (which is when information and ideas are most dangerous) in it when he says that experts are often wrong. This is a fact that has never been more evident than in right wing media dialogue on any political issue. The same could be said for the left, but we will save that for another time.
While there have been times that the unpredictability of certain weather phenomena has made weather experts seem foolish, the experts have been spot on with the predictions of Irma’s path, and they did a very good job in projecting the path of Harvey a couple of weeks ago.
So, what is the big deal with Limbaugh stating his opinion about the weather? First, you must understand the foundation for his stand. Being an extremist right-winger, Limbaugh cannot stand the idea of any type of phenomenon that can be ascribed to global warming or climate change. He has to be willing to immediately begin the process of mitigating the impact of such inexplicable phenomenon. What is the big problem with Limbaugh stating his opinion about the weather? When people’s lives are in jeopardy is not the time for political positioning and the defending of a particular philosophy. In cases like this, it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially after seeing the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey a couple of weeks ago. The city of Houston has been left with the devastation that will take years to recover from – not to mention the devastation that Irma has caused over the Carribean to this point.
I believe that news media outlets that will be viewed by large groups must have a sense of responsibility to be careful in the information the present and how they present it. This goes for both leftist and the right-wing fanatics. Leftwing reports that President Trump is causing these disasters in order to wreak racial havoc are just as irresponsible as the right-wing trash being spewed by Limbaugh and his cohorts. One thing is certain at this point and that is news media has become completely untrustworthy.in the information the present and how they present it.
