“Veep” creator Armando Iannucci is Working on a new show for HBO

Veep Season 7

It’s been a while since we haven’t seen something that’s politically charged in some way. From the news to TV sitcoms to movies everything has had some sort of political lean that has been an attempt to either highlight or undermine the current political landscape. A lot of the time it’s no so much about tearing people down as it is about using satire to show the futility and ridiculousness of the entire mess. Iannucci knows full well that his projects have been criticized for his political satire and yet he still pushed himself and others to complete such projects.

Some might say this was a dangerous move on the part of someone who might have been highly suspected of attempting to damage the reputations of politicians everywhere by showing such a controversial viewpoint, but instead he was completely willing to show his vision and allow it create an impact without fearing any reprisals. In the time of Stalin that might have met with a great deal of personal risk and even possible arrest, but as of now all people can do is voice their approval or disdain with his ideas.

Deciding to make films and shows about political matters is never an easy venture since there are so many that seem so easily offended in the process. Even if the film is true to form there will always be detractors, and there will always be those that seem offended by attempt. It takes so little to offend people these days that such shows and films are virtual hot topics before they even hit their stride. Iannucci has gone on to say that he’s actually glad that he left Veep and will only ever look back to see how the show is doing from to time. He is also glad of how the story has developed since it will give the audience time to cool down and focus one what’s going on in real life.

Painting the political landscape of any country in satire is usually enough to warrant a big reaction from any audience. While many people might love it others will no doubt be quite appalled at what seems like an utter lack of respect for the public offices that are held by elected officials. What many fail to realize is that satire is at times a very real jab at those in office even as it’s layered in comedy and protected by the First Amendment. Those jabs are often done in a way that allows people to know just what the writers, actors, directors, and others involved feel about what is happening in our current government. While some might simply be acting the part and in truth support everything the government does, it is very obvious that others do not.

Iannucci is stepping down as of now however as he moves on to a different project that has no political involvement for the upcoming future. He will be taking on the project of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens and will, as he’s said, be staying true to the spirit of the book.
