The Crow Reboot: Is This Even a Good Idea?

The Crow Reboot: Is This Even a Good Idea?

The Crow was an American movie based on a comic book of the same name. It was about a rock musician named Eric Draven who rose from his grave through the intervention of a magical crow for the purpose of exacting revenge on those who had killed both him and his fiancee. There are a number of reasons why the movie should be remembered, with examples ranging from its style to its emotion. However, The Crow tends to be remembered for the fact that its lead Brandon Lee was killed no more than a short time before production was complete.

For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Brandon Lee was the son of Bruce Lee and Linda Lee Cadwell. He had performed in a number of roles in low-budget movies in the 80s and 90s, but it was Eric Draven in The Crow that was supposed to have been his breakthrough role. Unfortunately, the people behind The Crow had made their own blanks for a gun-scene instead of just buying the commercial version, with the result that Lee was shot in the stomach by a bullet loaded into the prop. As a result, the movie had to be completed using a stunt double as well as CG-based special effects, with the finished movie being dedicated to Lee and his fiancee Eliza Hutton, who went on to push for tighter safety regulations on the movie-set. In the end, The Crow went on to earn more than $50 million at the box office on a budget of $23 million, which made it both a critical and a commercial success.

What Is The Crow Reborn?

Hollywood being Hollywood, it should come as no surprise to learn that there was a fair amount of interest in following up on the success of The Crow. For example, there was a sequel movie, a sequel TV show, and a couple of sequel direct-to-video movies, all of which met with a poor response. However, Hollywood’s interest in the franchise didn’t die, as shown by the fact that a reboot of The Crow was announced in 2008.

Given the fact that people will have no recollection of a reboot ever being released on the movie screen, it should come as no surprise to learn that there has been a series of changes in the actors, the directors, the producers, and the writers. With that said, it seems that The Crow reboot called The Crow Reborn is at last on its way to becoming an actual movie, seeing as how Sony Pictures has just announced its intentions to distribute the resulting movie worldwide. Jason Momoa and Corin Hardy were the last two people attached to the project as the lead and the director, but they are no longer attached to this particular version of the project at the moment, though it is possible that something will be worked out sometime soon.

Is the Reboot a Good Idea?

Regardless, it remains to be seen whether The Crow reboot will turn out to be a good idea or not. The people attached to the project have expressed their desire to be respectful to the original movie while still doing their own thing, so it should be fine in this regard. However, there is the issue of whether the reboot would be able generate enough interest from viewers to make it worthwhile, which is far from assured if the performances of The Crow sequels are any indication.
