Played by Samuel L. Jackson, Mace Windu was one of the more memorable characters introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. After all, he got the chance to go out in style against Emperor Palpatine instead of getting killed off in a much more ignominious manner, which was actually one of Jackson’s conditions for playing the character. Recently, Mace Windu has returned to the attention of the Star Wars fandom because of the comic book series called Star Wars: Jedi of the Republic – Mace Windu, which will cover some of his exploits in the Clone Wars.
Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Mace Windu:
Could See Shatterpoints
In the Star Wars Legends canon, some Force users have special Force abilities that are not available to most of their counterparts. In Mace Windu’s case, he could see what were called shatterpoints, which were short-lived faults in people as well as events that could bring about widespread changes when used in the right manner. In a practical sense, shatterpoints enabled Mace Windu to see his opponents’ weaknesses, thus making him that much more formidable as a fighter.
Crushed General Grievous’s Chest
Some people might remember how General Grievous had a cough in Episode III. This is because General Grievous encountered Mace Windu in the course of kidnapping then Chancellor Palpatine in the animated series called Star Wars: Clone Wars, which was set between Episode II and Episode III. When the cyborg turned to confront his pursuers with no fewer than four lightsabers, Mace Windu’s response was to crush his chest, thus making him that much more vulnerable for his later match-up with Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Has His Own Lightsaber Color
Out of setting, Samuel L. Jackson requested a special lightsaber color for Mace Windu so that he could see where his character was in the battle scene in Episode II. In-setting, Mace Windu received the special lightsaber crystal as a present from the inhabitants of a planet that he was visiting after a misunderstanding.
Has His Own Special Fighting Style
The Star Wars Legends canon came up with seven forms for lightsaber combat. For example, Obi-Wan Kenobi was depicted as a master of Form III, which was meant to maximize defense as a response to the popularization of blasters, while Dooku was depicted as a master of Form II, which was meant for maximum usefulness in single combat with other lightsaber users. Mace Windu was interesting in that he used a personalized version of Form VII, which stood out because it was supposed to be the most vicious and thus the most corrupting form.
Reached the Rank of Grand Master
When the title Grand Master is mentioned to Star Wars fans, most of them will think of Yoda. However, it is interesting to note that Mace Windu held the position of Grand Master before the start of the Clone Wars but chose to relinquish it because he wanted to take a more active role in the fighting.
