‘This Is Us’ fans are clearly looking forward to Season 2, which will be premiering on NBC on Sept. 26. The award-winning drama series is a fan fave since it began its first season. It’s been called “the best show on TV” and, just like the first season, when you watch this new season, you’re going to need a big box of Kleenex. The opening scene involves Mandy Moore as Rebecca and Sterling K. Brown as her adopted son Randall. Randall wants his wife to agree to them adopting but his wife, Beth, isn’t going for it. He asks Mom for advice and for a better understanding of why she and her husband, Jack, adopted him.
A Triplet by Fate
This is a very poignant scene between mother and son and is quite revealing about how his adoption came about. Through the usual flashbacks that are a ‘This Is Us’ trademark, we see Rebecca and Jack at the hospital on the night in question. In case you didn’t see season 1, Jack and Rebecca are a young couple who are expecting triplets. When the delivery time comes, one of the triplets is stillborn and, at the same time, a young African-American single father drops his son off at the local fire station since he can’t care for him on his own. The abandoned baby boy is placed in a bassinette right next to the remaining two of the triplets in the nursery at the hospital. Young Jack sees it as a sign that they are fated to become the boy’s parents.
And then There Were Three
As the scene goes on, we see that Rebecca is exhausted and grieving for her lost baby and isn’t really going for the idea of adopting the boy. In fact, she downright refuses and says “No”. Jack persists and, as Rebecca explains to Randall, he prevails as he often does in convincing her. And, then there were three again and they became the happy family of five. Randall appreciates his mother’s candid account of that night and feels better about things. She then waxes poetic as she remembers the now deceased Jack fondly, calling him pretty close to perfect. Time to reach for that Kleenex!
Second Season Predictions
So, onward and upward to the rest of Season 2 and whatever it may bring. Here are a few predictions going forward. We’ll get a glimpse into Rebecca and Jack’s early lives, going back to childhood to find out how rough Jack’s upbringing was with a horrible father. It will become increasingly clear that it is quite a feat that he turned out to be such a good father himself after what he had been through.
Sly Joins the Cast
As you’ve probably already read, Sylvester Stallone will be a guest star this season as Kevin’s co-star in a new movie that he’ll be shooting. We’re all looking forward to seeing Kevin, played by Justin Hartley, get his career back on-track after leaving his TV sitcom over dramatic differences. Sly will be playing himself in the film and we can’t wait to see how the two interact and where it all leads.
Awards Galore in Store for ‘This Is Us’!
In any case, no matter what Season 2 brings, it’s sure to be entertaining and tear-jerking at the same time. With such great writers and directors, as well as one of the best ensemble casts on the small screen ever, it has to win even more awards than last season. From the Emmys to the SAG awards and everything in-between, ‘This Is Us’ is sure to be up for lots of them.
