Raven’s Home Review: Raven Tests Out Being Both Mom and Dad

Raven's Home

Raven Baxter is one unique parent, but is she ready to be the only parent? Raven’s Home itself may have two mothers, but it’s been understood that there’s at least one other parent who is still apart of the equation. Raven’s first love, now ex-husband, Devon Carter has remained a steady presence in his kids and Raven’s life. It’s actually a wonderful thing for the Disney Channel to show that parents can not only be amicable, but be friends post-divorce. They complement each other, support each other, and appreciate what the other has to say. (What a concept!) When Devon announced he got a job in another city, Raven knew things were going to change again, and she would have to help her kids adjust. We all know how quietly Raven does adjusting.

Everything starts out well with Raven throwing Devon’s going away party. It’s a chance for them to feel like a family one more time before he leaves, as well as for Raven to crack a few sarcastic jokes about her pregnancy with the twins (thanks for keeping it real Disney). When Devon leaves, Booker and Nia don’t just miss him, they miss all of the little things that make their relationship with their Dad special. They miss making spicy chili, watching scary movies, going on giant amusement park rides, and Admiral Bear, the first stuffed animal their dad ever won for them. It’s too bad Chelsea accidentally threw the Admiral, sans hat, away. Let’s just say that even when Levi and Chelsea find the Admiral, he’s done for.

Raven really does try to do the dad things, but she just can’t if they’re going to literally make her sick. But this is Raven, who we know will go to extremes to get the desired outcome from her visions. (P.S. Raven’s dance moves are just the right kind of embarrassing for her kids, but totally on point!) It’s the same type of extreme that Chelsea will go to in order to fix her mistake. A trip to the amusement park is successful for both moms. After battling a booth worker who tries to cheat Chelsea and Levi out of another Admiral Bear, Levi wins that bear his way. Seriously, the playground should watch their backs around that kid during dodgeball! Meanwhile, Raven, Booker and Nia get stuck on a ride for 45 minutes as Raven tries to calm down long enough to be honest with her kids. That doesn’t seem like it would be tough, but admitting to your kids that you’re afraid you might not be able to make things right for them can actually be really difficult. Nia and Booker understand this, and they reassure their mom that though things will be different, it will be okay. As for Admiral Bear 2.0, that poor bear just has the worst luck.

Raven should stick to Mom’s special weekends instead of trying to recreate Dad’s. However, does it seem that Booker and Nia do too much to try to reassure their mother? Fingers crossed that will change when the psychic secret comes out.
