With the revival of Star Wars, Star Trek, and other well-known properties, there can be no doubt about the fact that science fiction is experiencing its boom-times. Furthermore, there are no signs that this trend will be stopping anytime soon, seeing as how there are plenty of great sci-fi movies that are scheduled for release in 2018.
Here are five of the most anticipated sci-fi movies of 2018:
Alita Battle Angel
Alita Battle Angel has been in development for a long, long time. In fact, there is evidence that James Cameron was planning on making the movie as far back as 2000, which was when the battleangelmovie.com domain name was registered. Regardless, the upcoming Alita Battle Angel is based on the Battle Angel Alita manga, which focused on the efforts of the titular cyborg to recover her lost memories. Since the movie is supposed to be based on the first four volumes, this means that a fictional sport called motorball will be playing an important role.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
The upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be the fifth installment in the franchise. Furthermore, it will be a direct sequel to Jurassic World, meaning that fans of the franchise can expect a follow-up to that movie’s narrative. So far, not much information has been released about the movie, though it is known that some familiar faces such as Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be making a return.
Pacific Rim: Uprising
Pacific Rim: Uprising will be set a decade after the events of Pacific Rim. Since the Jaegers proved their value in that movie, more of them have been built, which is rather fortunate because the new movie will be seeing the return of the kaiju threat. It is interesting to note that for some time the fate of the Pacific Rim sequel was in serious doubt, but that changed when the Wanda Group bought out Legendary Pictures because the first movie had been so successful in the new owner’s homeland of China.
Ready Player One
Based on the novel of the same name, Ready Player One sees a world in such a bad state that more and more people are spending more and more time in a virtual simulation of the real world called OASIS. Its narrative focuses on a teenager competing to find a secret treasure buried somewhere in OASIS, which will give the finder ownership of the simulation as well as its creator’s enormous fortune. Unsurprisingly, there are other people who are interested in the same prize, meaning that there are plenty of threats as well as plenty of tension.
Untitled Han Solo Movie
At this point in time, the movie remains unnamed, but assuming that things go according to plan, 2018 will see the release of a Star Wars movie centered around Han Solo. Like Rogue One, it will be a standalone movie but centered around Han Solo and Chewbacca’s adventures before the fateful meeting in A New Hope. Furthermore, it is worth noting that the movie is supposed to include an encounter with Lando Calrissian, which should flesh out some of their relationship in the canon.
