You might not recall this 1990 comedy about love and what a person will do to obtain it, but it’s one of the few moments in film when a person’s desire will override their common sense. There have been several movies like this before and after the film, but they all have one very common theme that draws them together. They show just how desperate love can make a person. Nobody’s Perfect is a great look into the life of a young man that so badly wants to get close to the woman of his dreams that he’ll do something that’s so outlandish and insane that even the attempt can make you cringe.
So why should you watch Nobody’s Perfect?
It shows the lengths to which someone will go when they’re really in love.
I know, you’re rolling your eyes and saying that no one in real life would ever do this, right? Well you’re not too far off the mark since in Hollywood movies it seems that people are a lot less discerning when it comes to the unique differences between a man and a woman. But honestly it goes a little beyond this. In the film Parker goes beyond when he turns up to the last match still dressed as Stephanie. In most films when the game is up and the man is exposed as a guy in drag then he typically won’t go back to the outfit again no matter what. The only thing that saves this persona for him is his friend, who shows up at a hearing about his misconduct dressed as Stephanie. Love doesn’t just affect how a couple will act, but how those around them will act to preserve it.
It shows the difficulty between young men and women and what each of them thinks.
There’s no getting around the fact that men and women think differently and entertain different notions of what’s acceptable in society. Women try to look their best in order to impress men, while men in turn attempt to do anything and everything in their power to attract a woman. Once they have the woman however most men will do very little to follow up with their attempts. But the flip side of this is that they will expect the woman to still make herself look attractive.
Friends are a complicated matter.
Parker’s friend betrays him in the film even under the guise of trying to help him. In the movies or the real world this would undoubtedly cause a rift between friends that would be difficult if not impossible to heal. True friends however are hard to find and thus are easier to forgive at times. When his friend shows up in the courtroom to help him out, Parker knows that no matter what’s happened between them that he is lucky to have someone that’s got his back.
Whether you’ve seen the movie or not it’s worth watching, or watching again just because it’s that funny and that charming. Films like this might not seem entirely realistic but they serve to prove the point that love is sometimes strong enough to make you do strange things.
