Judge Cuts. The most nerve-wracking stage of the competition. It’s do or die (metaphorically) time for the first 20 acts. Who will step up their game and make it to the Top 7? We find out on tonight’s America’s Got Talent as Chris Hardwick serves as a guest judge.
The night started off with Sara and her dog Hero. The pair did a museum robbery routine that impressed the judges. Simon was practically beaming at the improvement since he was the one who begged his fellow judges to reconsider their decisions the last time Sara and Hero performed. Though I am happy that Sara and Hero made it to the Top 7, I still feel that the act was the same as before. It didn’t have that wow factor that I was hoping for.
A few more acts went through the motions and performed their respective talents. None of which made me think that they are worthy enough to make it to the Top 7. I’m not a judge on the show, but I am baffled that the show would allow acts like Maw Kitty the burlesque dancing granny or Eric Jennifer the comedian. I just don’t find his jokes funny. Harrison’s jokes were better than his as I actually found them amusing. Shame the Harvard graduate did not make it to the live show, but perhaps he will be able to perform on bigger stages.
The two magicians Eric Jones and Tom London wowed the crowd with their performances. I was especially surprised by Tom’s act as he predicted each of the historical landmarks that the judges had chosen. Eric Jones’ card trick was amazing as well and that earned him a spot in the Top 7. I was hoping that Tom would make it to the Top 7 as well, but I agreed with Simon when he told him that he needs to learn to be a better performer as his stage presence deterred a little bit.
The Golden Buzzer for the night went to Angelica Hale, who covered Alicia Keys’ hit: Girl On Fire. Hardwick was thoroughly impressed by her performance that he hit the golden buzzer, sending the little girl through to the live show. She definitely deserves the honor, of course. Now it’s a matter of how she’s going to top this performance when it’s time to go live in Hollywood.
The most nerve-wracking, nail-biting act of the night has to be Demian’s escape act. When the camera feed cut off and the time was up, I didn’t see the escape artist anywhere. I then began to fear the worst. His wife was frantic, screaming at the crew members to get her husband out of the wooden coffin. Then one of them revealed himself to be Demian, I let out the breath I didn’t know I was holding. His wife made her way over to him and pushed him as if to say “Please don’t scare me like that ever again!” before going into her husband’s arms, thankful that he got out alive. Simon even said when he critiqued Demian’s performance that the latter almost gave him a heart attack.
Final Notes and Top 7:
When Hero jumped offstage toward Simon and ignored Chris when the comedian/host came to pet the dog, it made me chuckle. The dog then went back, presumably per Sara’s instruction, toward Chris. The guest judge wanted to embrace the dog but fell flat on his face instead. You amuse me greatly, Chris Hardwick!
The Singing Trump’s act amused me as well. The Trump impersonator covered two of the greatest Backstreet Boys songs ever and I found myself grooving along as the former performed. He ended up making it to the Top 7 listed below.
