5 Movie Flops That Were Supposed to be Sure Box Office Hits

There are many factors that can contribute to the success of a film. Some of these include having a cast of well-established actors, using an experienced director, having a big budget and using an amazing script. When all of these factors are combined, people are usually certain that the movie will be a big hit. However, even when a film has all the elements of a fantastic film, the box office figures may tell a different story.

Here are five movie flops that should have been a sure-fire hit.

1. Green Lantern

Transforming comic book superheroes into movie characters is a proven strategy for a successful film and this wasn’t the only reason why Hollywood expected success with Green Lantern. The casting of Ryan Reynolds only made the success of this film a greater certainty. Unfortunately, this formula didn’t work in this instance. The production costs alone for this movie exceeded $200 million. Therefore, the worldwide gross taking of $219 million was massively disappointing for everyone involved.

2. Evan Almighty

Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey, was a hugely successful film. The film cost just $81 million to make but raked in $484 million worldwide. On the back of this success, Evan Almighty was produced as a sequel to this film. Steve Carell, a popular and talented actor, was chosen to take the lead. This casting was not enough to make this movie a hit. The script was poor and there was a budget overspend followed by critics panning the movie. Evan Almighty Struggled to take just over $100 million.

3. Ghostbusters

A huge buzz surrounded the reboot of the original Ghostbusters movie, this time using an all-female team. It had enthusiastic support from feminists and the reunion of director Paul Wiig and actresses Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy only added to the excitement. A big publicity campaign was launched to promote the movie and production costs totaled $144 million. Once the film was released, the buzz came to an abrupt end and the film only achieved a worldwide gross of $229 million; not what the producers or studio had expected.

4. Deepwater Horizon

This film is based on a real-life tragedy; an explosion on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The dramatic storyline was expected to appeal to moviegoers. Mark Wahlberg was cast in a leading role and his former films had achieved success. Furthermore, experienced director Peter Berg was hired to direct Deepwater Horizon. It seemed that this movie had all the ingredients to make it a hit. Despite this, the movie failed to cover the production costs of $122 million achieving a domestic gross of just $61.4 million.

5. Catwoman

With many comic book superheroes becoming box office hits and the beautiful and talented Halle Berry cast in the leading role, the only outcome for this movie was surely success. Both a budget overspend and a poor script led to the failure of this movie. The domestic gross was an embarrassing $40 million and even Berry slated her own movie. If even the leading lady slates the movie, it definitely classifies as a movie flop.
