Movies based on books are often criticized because most often the book is better than the film. However, several films based on books have been successful at the box office. “The Hunger Games” movies were a great success. “The Great Gatsby” was good too. “Gone With the Wind” is a classic. Some would argue that the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movies are better than the books. This year there have been several best selling books that would be great as movies.

Into the Water
“Into the Water” was written by Paula Hawkins who also wrote “The Girl On the Train”. Last year “The Girl On the Train” was turned into a successful movie. Like “The Girl On the Train”, “Into the Water” is a psychological thriller that is the perfect scenario for an exciting movie. “Into the Water” is different than the former novel by Paula Hawkins however. This novel’s story is not as confusing as the former. It is thrilling though. The plot begins with the story of a girl who was accused of being a witch in the 16th century and who was killed for it. Fast forward to the month of August 2015 when several women are murdered by drowning in a small British town. This is a great setup for a thrilling movie.
Nighthawk (The NUMA Files)
Clive Cussler and Graham Brown co-wrote ”Nighthawk (The NUMA Files)”, a suspenseful thriller would make an exciting, action packed film. The novel is about the NUMA crew who needs to uncover the fate of a missing American aircraft before the Russians and Chinese find it. The NUMA crew is aware that the aircraft is carrying highly classified cargo that must be held at sub-zero temperatures to remain inert. The rush is on the find the dangerous matter and to find it before it gets into dangerous hands.
*A Dog’s Purpose
Bruce Cameron’s novel “A Dog’s Purpose” was released in January of this year and has already been made into a movie. The story follows the life of a dog that is reincarnated into different dog’s lives beginning in the 1950’s. Each reincarnations begins with the birth and ends with the death of each dog. The book and film are comedic and dramatic as the dog searches to find its specific purpose in life at the specific time. Cameron co-wrote the screenplay which helped give the movie the vision he intended with the novel.
Camino Island
John Grisham’s books have been made into good films in the past. His latest novel “Camino Island” would make a good movie. The book is fast paced and light so it would be easy to turn into a good exciting movie. The mystery follows the theft and recovery of missing F. Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts. It is full of twists and turns that would easily be transformed onto film.
The Ministry of Utmost Happiness
Indian author Arundhati Roy debuted a novel 20 years ago. That novel “The God of Small Things” was critically acclaimed and remains popular reading. Now Roy brings us “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. This energetic and emotional novel follows the life of Anjum and his search self discovery and acceptance in Indian society. Anjum is a “hijra”, a transgender person becoming a female. The often taboo subject is dealt with insightfully as Anjum journeys across India seeking others who understand his plight.
