The winner of the ICON award this year was Cher.
Here are some of the most surprising Billboard Music Awards moments ever.
Fashion
The styles worn at the Billboard Music Awards may be the most surprising of any awards show. You can expect everything from glamorous gowns to funky outfits to risque looks on the Blue Carpet. Madonna wore an interesting ensemble to the 2013 Billboard Awards when she won for Top Touring Artist. She wore a fishnet dress with garters and a feather collared bomber jacket. Shania Twain’s 2003 outfit puzzled many. She wore a shredded color-blocked shirt with an open mouth graphic on her chest, parachute pants and sneakers. Rita Ora’s Fausto Puglisi gown in 2015 was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. Jennifer Lopez’s Charbel Zoe Couture dress showed off much of the singer’s body. In 2002, Justin Timberlake with a broken foot showed up in a wheelchair with “nurses”.

Performances
The Billboard Music Awards has left us speechless with performances. In 2011, Britney Spears and Rihanna gave a sexy performance of “S & M”. In 2013 Prince performed an amazing medley of “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Fix Ur Life Up”. That is the same year that Justin Bieber was booed by the audience while accepting the Milestone Awards. The year before that, Jordan Sparks and John Legend performed a beautiful tribute to Whitney Houston. Houston’s sister and daughter accepted the Millennium Award on her behalf. It was 2014’s post-humus performance by hologram that was most surprising. That year, Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande put on a show-stopping performance of their hits “Fancy” and “Problem”. Last year, Celine Dion performed for the first time since her husband Rene Angeli’s death and was presented with the ICON award by their 16 year old son Rene-Charles.
Odd Pairings
Odd pairings are often spotted at the Billboard Awards ceremony. In 2012, we saw Kris Kristofferson, Taylor Swift, Zooey Deschanel and Julie Bowen together. In 2015, we saw Zendaya, Martha Hunt, Taylor Swift, Lily Aldridge, Hailee Steinfeld and Ellen Pompeo appear together on stage. Who could forget the 2003 presenters, David Grohl and Triumph the Comic Dog?
