Given where we are technologically with movies today, sometimes it’s nice to look back at some of the pioneers who had the amazing skills to make characters from books and comics come to life. All of us will always point to Walt Disney in the world of animation but there’s another name that doesn’t go nearly as recognized. That name is Ray Harryhausen. He’s considered a legend in stop motion.
Harryhausen is the director of classics like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and Jason and the Argonauts (1963). But well before these films he brought his developing SFX wizardry to the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The movie you are going to see below was made in 1949. The fluidity between movements makes it appear like the characters are dancing. So beautiful and well done. This man had exceptional talent. Remember guys, this was done in 1949. Can you even imagine what Ray would be capable of with today’s tools?
