This year’s Daytime Emmy Awards are a week away, and we’ve got our takes on the frontrunners in the Daytime Drama categories. This past week the Television Academy released the storyline clips submitted for this year’s Daytime Emmy’s. Before the winners are announced, we’ve got our take on who should take home the trophies. The Bold and the Beautiful‘s Heather Tom, General Hospital‘s Nancy Lee Grahn and Laura Wright, and The Young and the Restless‘s Gina Tognoni and Jess Walton are nominated in the Best Leading Actress Category. We have our pick for the frontrunner, as well as who comes up a very close second should the Academy not share our opinion.
Dear God, I can’t think of a more difficult decision to be made at this year’s Daytime Emmy’s than the Lead Actress category. All 5 women already have their Emmys, and some have quadruple that amount, so they don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Their work is simply incomparable, which is why putting these particular women in the same category and expecting one to be better than the other is actually appalling to think about. Yet a decision has to be made. I can’t make a decision on the caliber of the work, so what it came down to for me was who could express a rainbow of emotions in one scene.
Even making this consideration, it came down to a tie between Jess Walton and Nancy Lee Grahn. These two phenomenal actresses really know how to stay in the moment and command the scene for minutes at a time. Not that the other women don’t do the same, but there were tiny nuances in Walton and Grahn’s performances that they hadn’t shown before. I fell in love with Walton’s rant on all of the “perfect people” who pushed Jill Abbott’s son Billy down even as he lay in a hospital on life support, while Grahn mourned the loss of Alexis’s marriage while standing in front of her husband as if he was a stranger. Not only could you feel their pain, you were cheering them on the entire time.
