You guys remember when I talked Walking Dead at PaleyFest last week? If not, the highlight of the panel was when show runner Scott Gimple said that the show had at least another 100 episodes in it. If you’re keeping track at home, the 100th episode would be the 1st episode of season 8. By that math we’d be looking at another 7-8 seasons. While some fans think that the series might be headed for an ending, Gimple had another gem while on the panel.
“We are trying to do twenty years. The (“Walking Dead”) comic has certainly done it, and I look forward to every issue,” said Gimple. Speaking at the Paley Center for Media’s annual PaleyFest in LA, he said he envisions a run to rival the Fox juggernaut “The Simpsons. ‘The Simpsons’ has been on 26, 27 years, so that’s a challenge – so OK, challenge accepted. Done,” he said.
Gimple also said that the cast isn’t going anywhere. According to the Daily News:
“We try to reinvent the show every eight episodes. We have this story that is a fidelity to the comic book, but we’re also exploring original stuff, and those things help us go on every year. We want to try do it better, do things we haven’t done, take risks. It’s scary as hell, but as long as we keep doing that the show can go on and on.”
Leading man Andrew Lincoln has been rumored to be unhappy and looking for an exit. But exec producer Greg Nicotero shot that notion down.
“We love what we do. I spent 10 days with Andy, Jeffrey (Dean Morgan) and Norman (Reedus), and halfway through our press tour we are like ‘We have an awesome job. This is the greatest job you could have.’”
So what do you think folks? You think you have another 13 seasons of The Walking Dead left in you? I personally don’t see how this is even remotely possible. The Simpsons, which Gimple was alluding to is first off, a cartoon and second off, doesn’t “age.” The characters will always look the same and the show is about a family living in the present. Can you imagine a Negan strolling around into his 60s? I don’t know guys, this seems a little excessive. Maybe if you want to extend the show by doing spinoffs or something, but I can’t picture The Walking Dead being on the air in 2030. That’s just insane.
