It wasn’t until 2001 that the category of “Best Animated Feature” was introduced. While animated films have been around since the Oscars began, not enough were produced on a yearly basis to have a category of their own. However, as soon as digital animation came to the forefront of the industry, studios like Pixar paved the way for other animators to display their talents. Now, each year hundreds if not thousands of animated features and shorts get produced.
This year’s nominees include a strong field with Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle, and Zootopia competing against each other. Who will win? We’ll have to wait for Sunday evening to find out. But one thing is for certain. Animated films are here to stay and many would argue they are just as good if not better than their “human” counterparts.
