Scorpion: Walter and Sylvester Play Chess. Happy’s Dad Goes to Prison.

Scorpion

When it comes to the people that you love, sometimes there is no place to hide. Sometimes, there’s only pain. In this Valentine’s Day episode of Scorpion, a member of Team Scorpion learns to deal with that loss. Oh, Ralph also deals with a dilemma of his own as he is asked by two girls at school to go to the Valentine’s Day dance.

The hour began with Happy and Agent Gallo playing a chess game. The latter tried to keep up with the mechanical prodigy’s moves but to no avail. It looks like someone needs to brush up on their chess. Happy’s Dad then showed up, thinking that Agent Gallo wants him to look at his car. The Homeland agent then revealed that he doesn’t want to talk about the car, but about something else.

That something else is that Mr. Quinn had to testify against a drug dealer named Sonny Dubin. It turns out that Mr. Quinn used to work for Dubin wiping VIN numbers off of stolen cars and that Dubin is using said vehicles to smuggle in drugs across the border. Agent Gallo then informed Mr. Quinn that in addition to his testimony, he would also serve a two-year prison sentence to keep him safe from Dubin’s henchmen. Happy, upon hearing this news, is furious. She had just gotten her father back in her life, and now she is going to lose him again.

Meanwhile, the team got a case from the CIA. They are to go to Sardovia to rescue a woman named Natalya. She is a U.S. Spy/world-renowned chess grandmaster. Oh, and she has never lost a single match against anyone. Walter and Sylvester reignite their competitiveness for the game and go undercover (as themselves) to get to Natalya. It was interesting (as well as amusing) to see this side of the two geniuses. From the trash talk to Sylvester flipping out towards the end of the episode when Walter told the human calculator that he had sneezed on purpose during the chess match that almost ended their friendship. It was just classic Walter and Sylvester.

When the official scorer for the chess tournament disqualified both Walter and Sylvester, I wasn’t too surprised. Walter lost to Sylvester. Therefore he doesn’t qualify to face Natalya in the final match. Sylvester disrupted the board when he began to gloat. That’s what you get for celebrating early, Sly. It took some hacking skills from the both of them to get Walter a spot in the finals.

The scene where Walter discreetly told Natalya to head to the ladies room was brilliant. He moved a knight to C3, which, when viewed from another angle, becomes WC (the European shorthand for Water Closet aka the washroom). Natalya got the message and quickly ended the match, defeating Walter in one move. She then made it to the ladies room where Paige is waiting for her, and the two jumped out of the men’s room window and into a dumpster filled with what Paige called Dumpster Bread.

You’d think that after all that they would be halfway past the border and into Belarus, but they’re not out of the woods just yet. Natalya’s identity has been exposed, leading the Russian police to go after her. The team then used strategic chess moves to buy themselves some time to get to Belarus through the sewers. Mission accomplished!

Before I end this review, I would like to talk about Ralph’s little dilemma. I’m glad that he is having regular interactions with the other kids in his class. I mean, two girls asked him to the Valentines Day dance! Not one of the boys at my school invited me to go to any school dance with them! I was a bit perplexed, for lack of a better word, that he didn’t go to his mother for emotional advice. Yes, Team Scorpion thinks like him, but when it comes to dealing with emotions, that’s more up Paige’s alley. At least, Walter, Toby, and Sylvester were able to get the young genius to talk to his mother about the dance rather than with them.

My heart went out to Happy as she watched her father on the prison’s security camera. She wanted to break him out of jail, but if she were to do that, her father would become a fugitive rather than a person who willingly surrendered. Happy Quinn has never shed a tear or cried. Until now. Hopefully, she will recover from this pain and that one day; her father can be there to walk her down the aisle when she marries Toby.
