When Tom Brady won his fifth Super Bowl it likely put to bed any doubts that he is considered the best quarterback in the history of the NFL. However, the one man he’s compared to, Joe Montana, still won’t officially say that Brady is number one. When asked point blank about it, Montana said that he thinks it’s hard to put anyone in that bucket. The 49ers legend also mentioned some QB names that people aren’t even aware of. Sammy Baugh and Otto Graham are two names in particular that Montana mentioned who were well ahead of their time. Montana does make a good point in terms of saying it’s very difficult to compare different eras.
However, when asked if he thought he was the best quarterback ever, Montana said, “Even though people say it — and I appreciate it — I still can’t say that about myself.” That’s when his wife Jennifer came through with this line, “At home you’re saying that all the time!!”
So there you have it folks. Look, Joe Montana is as competitive as anyone in the world. Do you really think he’s just going to flat out say in public that Tom Brady is the best QB ever? He wouldn’t be Joe Montana if he did. Even Tom Brady could respect that. While Montana came off as diplomatic here, you know darn well he thinks he’s the best of all-time.
