Singer Vera Lynn Will Celebrate 100th Birthday with New Album

Often times when we read “100th birthday” or something about an age, it’s marked with sad news.   Most common would be the announcement that a person has died.  But today there’s an entertainer who is turning 100 and is doing something unprecedented to celebrate life.

According to London AP – Singer Vera Lynn is making plans to mark her 100th birthday with the release of a new album featuring many of her (very) old classics The album “Vera Lynn 100” is to be released March 17, three days before her birthday, a milestone this year that traditionally is recognized by Queen Elizabeth II. The songstress said Thursday it’s “truly humbling that people still enjoy these songs from so many years ago.” Lynn was known as the “Forces’ Sweetheart.” Her songs, including “We’ll Meet Again” and “(There’ll be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover,” were wartime anthems. She has not cut new vocals for the release, saying she prefers to remember her voice as it was. But there are new accompaniments to some of the songs.

Incredibly, Vera Lynn was born in 1917.  She released her first solo album at the young age of 18 in 1936 and went on to have a great career in music and film.  In 1952 she became the first British recording artist to have a record that topped the charts in the United States.  Remember folks, this is before The Beatles.   Now, in February 2017 Lynn will release a new LP entitled, “Vera Lynn 100” to be released 3 days before her 100th birthday on 17th March, 2017.

She currently holds the record for being the oldest UK artist to get a Top 20 Album at the age of 97.
