Nine times out of 10 if you are a Hollywood movie star or director and you lay claim to a Razzie award, it’s not the greatest honor. Every year for the past 36 years The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has been handing out awards for what are considered the worst movies and performances for a given year. This year, the 37th Razzie awards nominees have been announced. To what will be no one’s surprise, Batman Vs Superman and Zoolander 2 are leading the pack.
What’s interesting about the Razzie’s is that often times some of the best actors in the world get them. It’s just the way things work. Michael Cain for example is in tons of great movies but think about how many awful ones he’s been in too. Even this year Robert de Niro has been nominated. He’s one of the greatest actors of all time but his portrayal of Dirty Grandpa earning him a nomination for worst actor this year.
I guess on the bright side, agents must be saying “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”
According to the site’s press release:
Leading this year’s list of movie-misfires are the 15-years-too-late sequel Zoolander No. 2 and the WTF comic book battle-royale Batman v Superman. Each is up for both Worst Picture and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel. Other Worst Picture nominees include Dirty Grandpa, Gods of Egypt, Hillary’s America and Independence Day: Resurgence. Acting contenders include Ben Affleck, Johnny Depp, Julia Roberts and Robert de Niro.
“Winners” of this year’s tackiest Tinsel Town trophy will be revealed on Saturday, February 25 — the now traditional day before the 89th Annual Giving Out of the Little Gold Naked Men.
Voting Razzie Members (1,014 from 49 US States and 24 countries) selected contenders in 8 of our 9 categories. For Worst Screen Combo, they partnered again with Rotten Tomatoes where tens of thousands of users picked the nominees.
