After taking a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, Stephen Colbert returned to The Late Show last night, and it didn’t take him too long to switch over from reflecting on all the turkey and pie he had eaten during his Thanksgiving dinner with his family to discussing another, much stranger meal. I’m talking, of course, about Mitt Romney’s dinner with President-Elect Donald Trump, as the two men were photographed together this week at a French restaurant in New York. Many people believe that Trump is considering Romney for the position of Secretary of State, but nothing has been made official yet.
As Colbert noted throughout his opening monologue last night, Romney was one of Trump’s biggest critics during the campaign, calling him a “phony” and “fraud” and saying all his promises were “worthless.” However, now, after Trump has been elected, the former presidential candidate not only appears to be supporting Trump but actively working with him, and if all the rumors end up being true, Romney will soon be a member of Trump’s cabinet.
“Oh Mitt,” Colbert said, examining Romney’s expression in the photo taken of him and Trump at dinner. “I know he ordered the frog, but it looks like he’s eating crow.”
