If you ask me, there can never be enough horror on television. In the age of American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, and countless other series, it would be easy to say that TV horror is becoming oversaturated, but the thing that works for so many of these series is the niches that they carve out for themselves.
The latest highly anticipated horror series, premiering September 27 on Syfy, is Channel Zero, an anthology series that comes from Chronicle‘s Max Landis and Hannibal‘s Nick Antosca. Aside from having some impressive minds behind it, Channel Zero looks to stand out among the pack with its anthological focus on “creepypastas,” a form of horror storytelling that was popularized by internet culture (think Slender Man or Jeff the Killer). Channel Zero is going to focus on long-form storytelling as it adapts and reimagines a creepypasta over the course of a season, and the first season of the show is the story of Candle Cove. The network describes the season as follows:
Based on a popular “creepypasta” (user-generated horror stories that are published and passed around the Internet), Candle Cove centers on one man’s obsessive recollections of a mysterious children’s television program from the 1980s, and his ever-growing suspicions about the role it might have played in a series of nightmarish and deadly events from his childhood.
As a person that’s grown up with the internet and followed the evolution of creepypastas over time (and simply as a horror fan), I firmly believe that this series can be something special for fans of genre television.
