Empire Preview: See Cookie and Lucious’s Young Love

Empire

If you’re anxiously anticipating Season 3 of Empire, you’re not the only one. No matter how many cliffhangers are thrown out by the Lyon family, the one constant is the love Cookie and Lucious Lyon have for each other. Now in Season 3 we’ll get to see the early years of Cookie and Lucious. Deadline was the first to report that newcomers Ajiona Alexus and Jeremy Carver would take up the roles of young Cookie and Lucious in flashbacks. Now we can see the first glimpses of how their story started, and how their present-day relationship may not be as fractured as we think after the Season 2 finale.

We know the basic story of how Cookie and Lucious lived their married lives up until the time Cookie went to prison, but this will be the first time the audience gets to see how the couple started out. What we know so far is that Cookie and Lucious met when they were teenagers. Not much is known about Cookie’s upbringing except that she has a complicated history with both of her sisters. One of them stuck by her side, has a brief history with Lucious herself, and is an addict. The other married rich and left the neighborhood, but she has proved that she can still be there for her sisters. Lucious was already living on his own, rapping on the streets by the time he met Cookie. We have a pretty clear picture of the scary relationship Lucious has with his mother, but not much was known about his father until the season finale. That hour revealed to the audience, and to Lucious himself, some jaw droppers. Lucious actually witnessed his father’s murder, but seems to have been too traumatized to remember the family secret revealed seconds before it happened. In the season finale, Lucious found out that Tariq, the FBI agent who was trying to put him away, is actually his half-brother. The rest is Cookie and Lucious’s unseen history, until now.

Considering where we last left Cookie and Lucious, it will be nice to see them as kids. It’s doubtful that either one of them could be considered innocent or wholesome even at such a young age, but we’ll get to see them in a time where they weren’t as scarred as they are now. Not to mention, there’s nothing like young love.

Does this footage give clues as to who the young couple before they were Lyons?
