The Muppets Season Finale Review: A Kermit/Piggy Reconciliation?

The Muppets

The Muppets has been running on all cylinders since the creative change up. It just has. Things have been tighter, more focused, and just plain funnier. They’ve dealt with emotions that are just as realistic, but have leaned into the late night TV format, and come out with an excellent final product. This could have been undone if they’d had more episodes, but on the same token I’m so sad to see the finale come.

This week, on the season finale of The Muppets: Miss Piggy breaks her foot in rehearsal, so Kermit and Uncle Deadly take her to the hospital. While they are away, Rizzo, Pepe, and the rest of the gang try to stop Pizza (Pache) from taking over the show, and finding a substitute for Piggy. Under anesthesia, Piggy drops an L-bomb on Kermit, who  reciprocates. Willie Nelson and Jack White guest star.

What’s left to say, really? This finale was a culmination of all the righting of the ship that has gone on over the past several episodes. Pepe and Rizzo have been more fully integrated into the cast, which is a strong reflection of the comedy, and it showed as Kermit entrusted them in this episode. The sketches were more zany and Muppet oriented. Even the return of Lew Zealand righted some wrongs.

However, the best part of the creative resurgence that is The Muppets is the redemption of Miss Piggy. At the beginning of this season, Piggy was nothing short of insufferable. Vanity ruled her character, and everything she did that could’ve been funny was clearly taken too far. I’ve never been a Miss Piggy fan, and trying to put her front and center did not work out in their favor at the beginning. But since the midseason return, Piggy has been delightfully vulnerable and doused in realism, while still maintaining her uppity personality. It seems there was a direct correlation to how good episodes were and Piggy’s level of awfulness. But she’s been great in the last episodes, and it lifted the rest of the show.

Can we talk about Kermit and Piggy for a minute? I mean, we all know they’re meant to be together. I am assuming that they pursued that story because they weren’t sure if the show will continue. Honestly, I could’ve done without it, but Kermit and Piggy in a relationship story is what makes the Muppets who they are. In doing it, they’ve really come full circle as a show. Of course, we don’t know for sure if they reconciled.

As always, here are some of my favorite quotes/moments from the episode:

  • “He does not like when we goof off, which is why we make sure to double down on the goof”- Pepe
  • “For someone who loves attention, she’s weirdly averse to medical attention”- Kermit
  • “I see you’re feeling anxious, so you should pet my head”- Rowlf
  • “One, you called your night nurse Buck-Tooth Joe”- Uncle Deadly
  • “My favorite was the sexy financial aid officer at a junior college”- Pepe
  • Pepe works for this show, but perhaps his best role yet was “advocate for love”
  • “Well LEAVE THE WAFFLE”- Piggy

A lot of strong, funny moments and a Kermit and Piggy possible reconciliation? A strong finale. I really enjoyed covering this season and I hope to see this creatively rejuvenated show back for a second.

What did you guys think? Did you enjoy the finale? Let us know!
