Chris Rock’s Finest Oscar Worthy Acting Moment: Pookie in New Jack City

Everyone is eagerly anticipating Chris Rock hosting of the 2016 Academy Awards. Given all the racial attention it’s getting, Rock is 100% sure to set the stage on fire and make some seriously controversial jokes. Remember, not one African American was nominated in any of the major categories this year. That has prompted some prominent celebrities to boycott and refuse to attend the country’s biggest movie award ceremony.

But that’s not what this article is about. This is about remembering Chris Rock for his greatest acting performance in the history of his entire career. Before Rock blew up the world with his HBO comedy specials and before he was one of the most successful comedians of all-time, Rock had small parts in a number of movies in the late 80s and early 90s. One of his classic cult roles was that of Pookie, a crackhead drug addict in the movie New Jack City which starred Ice-T and Judd Nelson.  A movie that will go down in my mind as one of the coolest films of the 90s.

Pookie begins the movie as just another addict on the street when he first encounters undercover cop Ice T. Pookie’s character eventually gets off the drugs only to succumb to them once again leading to his death after a failed undercover sting of a notorious drug lord Nino Brown, played by Wesley Snipes.

Here’s Chris Rock in what I consider to be his finest acting moment of all-time. In case you’re wondering, I’m kind of joking. But then again, am I? Judge for yourself. Pookie!
