Quantico is speeding along during this first season, maintaining great pacing throughout its first six weeks. Let’s check out what happened in this week’s episode, titled “Go.”
The episode opens as Alex looks for the twins in the future timeline now that she believes one of them is responsible for the incident. Because of what he went through with them at the academy, though, Simon is hesitant about looking for them. I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s really interesting (if coincidental enough that it requires a major suspension of disbelief) that episodes of Quantico are structured to where the events in the future timeline that we see in a given hour match up well with the revelations taking place during the cadets’ time at the academy. As I said, it does require you to just look at it and accept how coincidental it is, but, once you’re able to do that, the story plays out surprisingly well.
At the academy, the cadets are having to go through their first true exam at Quantico. Everyone is simply given a blank piece of paper, though, and left in a room to complete it. The stakes continue to get higher and higher as the cadets try to figure out what they’re supposed to do, and it’s a “lesson” on the show that manages to stand out considerably from what Quantico has used before. Over the past couple of episodes, the writers have done exactly what I asked and have shown that they’re completely willing to mix things up now that the premise has been well-established.
I’m really pleased with the pacing the writers are taking in the post-bombing world, and they’re doing a great job at slowly rolling out the characters so that we aren’t overloaded with information all at once. Pacing in general on Quantico has just been pretty phenomenal throughout the season. Even on the less-intriguing episodes of the show, the pacing allows the story to move along at a breakneck speed that never slows down on reveals and character development. Characters, too, remain likable (even when they do things that disappoint us as viewers), and that is yet another strength that this series has.
I’m not going to talk about them specifically in order to keep from spoiling anything major for anyone that hasn’t watched the episode yet, but the final act of “Go” featured some big reveals and developments that are going to drive the show for at least a few episode into the future. The secrets on this show and who knows what is one of the most fun things to explore in the series, and I anticipate that the twists haven’t even really gotten started yet.
“Go” was a very strong episode of Quantico that went a long way to shake up the structure while still sticking to enough of the established formula that it’s recognizable. I’m glad that all of the elements on this series seem to be working so well this far into the season, and I’m hopeful that this trend continues well into the future.
